Where: Sunset Bay State Park in Coos Bay, OR
When: Saturday August 24th, 2019
Entry Fee: $35
The Sunset Bay Angler Of The Day Kayak Fishing Challenge is an annual Kayak only fishing competition held on the ocean in Coos Bay, Oregon. This year the tournament is set for Saturday, August 24th 2019. The launch site is at Sunset Bay State Park. The entry fee is $35 and we will have many great prizes available to win. The tournament starts at 5:30 AM and the measure-in ends at 2:00 pm.
This is a point based competition with points per inch values assigned to all the species available to catch on the fishing grounds. The largest single fish from each category will count towards your total. The angler with the most points wins! This competition will test your skill as an angler as you have to target different species with different techniques to be successful.
Point Values:
Chinook 4 points Coho 5 points Flounder 8 points Greenling 10 points Halibut 4 points Lingcod 5 points Rockfish 8 points Surf Perch 12 points.
The boundaries for the event are Baltimore Rock to the north and the south end of Simpson Reef to the south There will be captains bags for the first 50 anglers that register. If you want to be the first 50 you can pay your entry fee to my paypal at: r.marcum@charter.net. You can also register the night before at the captains meeting. You can also register the morning of the tourney. Someone will be at the launch site before first light. First launch will be at 6:00AM and last chance to measure-in your catch will be 2:00 pm. As long as you are in line at 2:00 pm your fish will be accepted. If you are not in line at 2:00 PM your catch will be disqualified.
Proper immersion gear and flying a safety flag is mandatory! If you show up in street clothes you will be disqualified . We have a perfect safety record and I want to keep it that way. If you haven't fished at Sunset Bay or in the ocean before find an experienced person and ask them to help you out and keep an eye on you. The pot(all entry fees) will be shared between two HOW chapters. The top 3 anglers will get a prize and some money, the rest will be given with a chip drawing. You will receive a poker chip with a number on it when you register, we will collect them after you register. These will be used to draw for the prizes. The top 3 will not be eligible for a chip prize unless we have a second round of chip draws. There will be a ticket drawing for a prize package. Tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5. 100% of the money for this drawing will be donated to Heroes on the Water. Last year we raised $2,552 for Heroes on the Water! I want to beat that this year. Please open up your wallets and buy a lot of tickets, it goes to a great cause! After the fishing there will be a potluck dinner and an awards ceremony. We will have a fish fry/taco feed so bring some fillets and a side dish, we always have an awesome feast! After the feast will be the awards ceremony. .
....THE POTLUCK DINNER AND AWARDS CEREMONY WILL BE AT THE GROUP CAMP GAZEBO AT BASTENDORFF BEACH CAMPGROUND......
Schedule of events:
5:30 AM First Launch
2:00 PM Measure-in ends (you must be in line or DQ)
5:00 PM Potluck Dinner
6:00 PM Awards Ceremony
All times are approximate except the measure-in.
It is gonna be a fun one this year, see you all there!

I fished with Mr. Hatler last weekend. He said he still has about 9 spots left in the group campsite at Bastendorff County Park if you are looking for accommodations. He'll be at ORC if you want to speak with him about reserving space.

Does anyone know how many people are currently signed up for AOTD? My wife just asked if we could wait until next week to put the money in PayPal.

Facebook page says 46.
-
Man I've had my site for months but I forgot to register - thanks for the reminder! My favorite trip of the year.
-
I believe we should start a AOTD potluck thread. My wife is asking what she/we should bring.
-
I just paid. Am I within the 50!? 😀
-
We paid to Roy's PayPal last night, pretty stoked! I think I can make some adjustments to recover from last year's disappointment.
-
Cabezon have been removed from the point value schedule ahead of the announced closure taking effect 8/16.
-
Lame sauce.
-
Last groundfish meeting I went to, ODFW said they would have their population surveys analyzed & would be looking a changing the rec fishing quotas, including cabezon.
-
We have 42 people prepaid and guaranteed a captains bag for the tourney. 8 bags left & only 8 days to go!

Just for clarification and there is no confusion to the location of this event as it is different than in years past. The captains meeting as well as the potluck/fish fry and awards are being held at the group camping site shelter at Bastendorf Campground- NOT the gazebo at the picnic/day use area. (See map)
-
Is anyone helping to plan the potluck, or coordinate dishes for the AOTD potluck?
-
What do you plan on bringing? If I like it I'll approve it. :-)
Also, I plan on bringing the big 55 cup coffee maker for use at the group campsite at Bastendorff. That way 20 people won't have to pack 20 coffee pots.
-
Good call Anthony! … but as long as its not Folgers... ::)
As for the potluck, there has been no coordination other than the fish fry planning by the usual suspects. Pretty much anything else is up in the air to bring for the potluck as a side dish desert or whatever.
-
I'll bring a couple of salads.
-
See the attached agenda for further details about the schedule of the event. Participants are encouraged to download and print.
See you all there!

Nice! Thanks!
As usual we're heading up early enough that bringing something home cooked probably isn't an option, HOWEVER, I'll be happy to contribute something that's needed, so I'll ask around. And I'll bring some GF batter and corn tortillas.
Oh and I'm bringing some avocado salsa.

Does "AOTD Placeholder" Qualify as a winner or would top 3 qualify as well?
Also, Will someone be available after 5:30 at the group site for waivers and bags? I am leaving PDX area and may not make it until after the time when everyone is meeting. Can always grab one the next morning too if that's easier.
-
Yes. Top 3 to be eligible for the Challenge of Champions.
Surely you could come find one of us when you get in (as long as its not too late). But yeah, the sure thing will be Saturday Morning at the launch for late arrivals such as yourself. Easy-peasy.

I’m heading down today. If the ocean is sloppy throughout the week I’ll probably take a run or two down to Gold beach for chinook. Hopefully I will be cooking nookie on the grilly for the potluck, if I don’t get lazy and sleep through the potluck again. That could be a bit more difficult to do now that the potluck is in camp. I’ll be in site 80 from Thursday through Sunday. Not sure where we’ll land today, but we are heading that way. See you there!
-
We're going to be in spot "Cabin 039" - I've never stayed there before so all I know is that means I have a cabin. Drop by and say hi! We're leaving tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
-
We'll have sites B32 and B33 at the state park. Booked before I knew of the group site stuff.
-
I'll be coming from Bandon the morning of. My lovely wife is signed up but won't be going. She's got to stay home to manage our ongoing bathroom remodel so I'll be by myself this year. I know she would appreciate y'all looking out for the old fart in the camo Trident. I usually don't make it past the lighthouse anyway. Good luck all.
-
I am in 78 and family is in 76. I think my buddy, Brice, has 74 or 77 not sure.

I usually don't venture too far either especially if the ocean isn't flat. I'd be happy to fish with ya.
Sounds like there's going to be a good group of us in the 70's loop.
@Casey, don't forget to save some nookie for your neighbors... wait, that didn't come out right. :spittake:

Yellow Outback and rocking a orange drysuit driving a big blue Dodge Diesel that you'll hear 20 mins before I arrive...
On that note, I apologize now for those camping at Bastendorff and are late sleepers.
-
We will be staying at Sunset Bay SP space A25.
We will be bring a multi layer homemade bean dip and something else that I am unaware of.
-
Beans and camping... why does that scene from Blazing Saddles come to mind? ::)
Edit:
Here ya go

Will bring Chips and homemade salsa (and beer) to the potluck.
-
I am cooking chowder as I write this! See you at Bastendorff!
-
I am bringing a friend and don’t have a spare radio. Anyone have a spare I can borrow for Saturday. If I break or lose it I will gladly replace it.
-
I have a Standard Horizon HX208S you can borrow.
-
I just read that China, quillback, and copper rockfish have to be released starting Friday.
-
Don't forget your descenders too...
-
Has anyone set up a list for food?
-

Thank you very much for the generous offer. I found a radio through my fb post. Look forward to fishing with you again Saturday.

Thank you again to all the organizers and volunteers for SBAOTD, this year was a fantastic event. My wife and I had to leave a bit early from the raffle and I didn't get to thank all of your properly, but I really appreciate all you guys stepping up and helping raise so much money for HOW. AOTD is definitely the event I look forward to most each year and I hope it can continue on in the future moving forward. If there's anything I can do to assist moving forward don't hesitate to ask. I am a long ways away, but willing to help as needed.
-
The food was outstanding as usual, thanks to the cooks, helpers, & all the great potluck dishes. Best attendance ever & over $3,850 raised for HOW.

Excellent.
-
Thank you to the event organizers! This was a fantastic event. I had a really good time and learned a lot there trying to target new species. Unfortunately on the drive home my wife and daughter were in a bad car accident. They were released from the hospital with bad bruises and lots of soreness. They were rear ended going down I five when slowing down for traffic. The person behind them did not stop. Lucky to have them both by my side today as I celebrate my wife and my seventh anniversary of marriage. Pictures don’t really do it justice.
-
Wow. Glad they are ok. That is pretty scary
-
Zach... so glad your wife and daughter are OK from that accident.
-
Zach,
So glad your family is ok, bruises will heal.
It's one of my worst fears, so many of us traveling so far..
-
Great time fishing and hanging with old friends and making some new ones. The potluck was amazing. So many good dishes. I was stuffed. Counting down the days till the next one!
Zach, we saw the accident on our way through. There were multiple cars involved with one way off in the ditch. We were on the frontage road so we couldn't stop and check on every one. Glad everyone came through relatively ok and congrats on the anniversary.
-
What a mess, Zach! Couldn't be happier it wasn't worse than it was. Someone was looking out for the family, for sure.
I got a dish-by-dish accounting of the potluck from some guy with whom I often go fishing. I'm told the food "was to die for" which is the highest praise that guy can give. I've made a demand for a kid (or grandkid) to come down and watch the dogs next year so I can stay for the awards - and for dinner.
Big round of applause for the organizers (including Roy and Dudi). You guys who were there for Challenge Day did a fantastic job on short notice. And thanks to the sponsors for their generous donations. Great stuff in the Captains' Bags.
I got to sit on the sidelines talking with Dana, which is almost as much fun as fishing.* Thanks, Dana.
* That was another exaggeration, but it was fun.
-
Oh no Zach! I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was but that is terrible! Prayers for a speedy recovery for both of them!
-
Unless I missed it in another post, can someone post the final results?
I was told that I got 6th place, which means my trend of getting 6th place every odd-numbered year continues - streak unbroken!
-

Hope no one minds me putting a bunch of pictures here...
A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this happen and who showed up to enjoy the time together. Too many names to remember or list but it was awesome of Erik and Dana and their significant others to step up and see this through, and Anthony, of course Roy and Dudi, Paul I think was involved, and everyone else I'm forgetting.
We had a great trip overall and it was so wonderful to have such nice conditions on game day. I felt great in the morning and got off to a good start but unfortunately by about noon I wasn't feeling so good anymore; I figured it was a side-effect of the sea sickness meds but it turns out I was actually sick - still not felling 100% today.
My favorite memory from fishing was the big copper rockfish I caught, with a close second being the close encounter(s) with whales - I've had plenty before but none this close to my boat before. After getting a greenling and rockfish in the first 30 minutes I worked hard for a lingcod, and then ground for over 2 hours on perch without a single bite.
Oh yeah, and CONGRATS to Casey for being the only one to bring in 4 species! I knew when I saw that look on your face back on shore we were in for trouble ;D
Looking forward to next year already!
-
Great photos, love that pic w the big copper!

No stress on this - whenever is great. I just figured I'd missed it somewhere as I was a bit out of touch Sunday and Monday.

Lauren and all the rest that was there, lets not forget this picture of early morning

Great picture!
