Sundays work better for me, too. Looked it over last night, and Sunday, March 15 looks like a good date. That work/not work for anyone interested in coming?

Location - anyone know much about Blue Lake on the east side of Portland? Looking on the map it appears to have easy access and a fairly central location.

Blue Lake might work.  They limit the lake to the parks own rental craft during the summer, but it looks like you can put small private canoes and kayaks in during the winter.

Quote
Boating at the lake
Paddle boats, row boats and canoes are available to rent at Blue Lake between May 1 and Sept. 30. For more information about boat rentals, call 503-661-6087. Privately owned watercraft are allowed on the lake for the purpose of angling between Oct. 1 and April 30, as long as they do not exceed 14 feet in length (17 feet for canoes) and 3.0 horsepower in motor capability.

I'm hoping a 15 ft kayak falls under their "canoe" category.

sweet, my boat's 13'. I'll be passing by there next week, so I can stop & check it out in more detail. Being able to fish before/after would be nice, too.

any other location suggestions?

Blue Lake and March 15th work for me, as of right now.  Didn't know we could kayak on the lake now or I'd have tried sooner.  I'll have to check it out.

Got to check out Blue Lake yesterday, and it should be perfect. Location is central enough, easy water access, and you can fish before/after if interested. So, just to set it all in stone:

Date: Sunday, March 15
Location: Blue Lake Park, 20500 NE Marine Dr (http://www.oregonmetro.gov/files/places/bluelakemapbrochure.pdf)
Time: 11:00am
Cost: Free (note - park charge $4/person access fee, unless you have an annual pass)

We'll be covering fundamental paddle strokes - forward strokes, reverse strokes, turning strokes, draw strokes, etc. I'll also have paddles on hand from AT & Bending Branches, and will be contacting the Werner rep today to see what demos I can get from him.

[update pending trade]

It's probably not what you're looking for in a first paddle, but I have an AT Fishstix that I won at the Pacific City tournament last year.  I have only paddled with it a couple times and It's really, really nice.   However, I also have a high end Lendal through my pro deal which obligates me to use it and not the AT.

http://www.atpaddle.com/Sporting/Sporting.html (http://www.atpaddle.com/Sporting/Sporting.html)

It retails for $349 but I'd be willing to depart with it for $250 OBO.   I suppose I should post this in the classifieds section.

Anyway, I'll bring it and my Lendal to the paddle clinic for everyone to check out.

Brian

just heard back from the Werner rep, and I'll be grabbing some paddles from him as well. Anyone have anything in particular they want to see from them? I'm a bit out of touch on their lineup these days.

Have fun this weekend everyone.  Big ups to Brian for putting this on.

Can you all do me a favor?  At the end of the session, can you dump your self in the water and do some self rescues.  It's a practice session, may as well practice!!!

I wouldn't mind playing around with either a Kalliste or Camano, but don't go to any great lengths on my part as I may have scored a paddle this week anyway.

If you ordered one you can pick it up and I'll check you off my list.  If you didn't already order one and want one, $17 will get you one of the 10 extra we purchased.

sorry we had to bail. my elbow tendonitis has been flaring up and yesterday's paddle on the willy took its toll. i did run into wali at sunset though. he has ditched his traditional pink top and is sporting a lovely blue to match his yum yum malibu boat.

I had a blast. It was great meeting a couple of you.

This was only my second time in a kayak of any sort, and I have to say my know-how increased exponentially. I still have a long way to go, but I feel like my strokes are much more effective now.

My dad, who has owned a kayak for a couple of years, also said he feels much more in control of his yak now.

We had a little sun, a little drizzle, some major rain and a bunch of wind.

Thanks, Brian, for putting this on!

p.s. - Bsteves' AT paddle is off the market...

I think paddle class went pretty well.   Thanks Brian.

The weather varied between nice and sunny, cloudy with a decent downpour to gale force winds.  Luckily the really bad wind didn't occur until the end.

Here are some pictures.

Sorry I did not make it out.  The wind and rain pounding against the house scared me away.  If you decide to do it again, I will definitely be up for it since I have had limited chances to get my new X-13 out.  By the way, what is the main differences between the AT Fishstix and the AT Xception SL Tour Carbon (which is what I have)?
Title: Re: NWKA Paddling Class by OutdoorPlay **DATE CONFIRMED**
Post by: Alkasazi on March 16, 2009, 11:25:25 AM
no worries. hard as it was raining when I left home, I wasn't sure anyone was going to show up. as for the Fish/Xception, the difference is materials. The Xception is carbon, and the Fish is glass. This weekend was the first time I'd used a Fish (I've used the Xception for years), and I liked it. Very similar feel to the Xception on the water. bit heavier, but also more durable, especially in the tips.

We had a great time.  It was nice to meet everyone and get some good paddling instruction.  A big "Thank You" to Brian and OutdoorPlay for putting this on.  We really appreciate it.  I'll do it again just for the practice.  Thanks Brian!
