I am nowhere near a fly shop and can't walk in and match them up myself.

I'm starting to tie large rockfish flies, using large and x-large dumbbell/hourglass eyes.

I don't know what size of adhesive eyes match those large dumbbells.

Any suggestions?

It all depends on the manufacture, each has its version of large and x-large. Some you can get that are recess for stick on eyes others have the pupil built in like I-Balz or real eyes or my favorite are Pseudo Eyes in x-large. The ones your talking about I think are the  x-large 1/10 oz. size if they are and you got then in nickel  you really don't need eyes to stick on them just use as is as they all ready look like shiny eyes. But if you want to add stick on eyes I use 5-7-8 mm.

No, no!  Just using shiny nickel eyes as-is isn't complicated enough!  It's fly-fishing, as you well know.

Thank you.  I'll be happy not having to glue eyes onto the dumbbells.  I've seen many patterns that call for adhesive eyes, but getting rid of one step is fine by me.

Appreciate it.

I use black nail polish and a toothpick to give the dumbells a pupil.  It probably doesn't matter to the fish but I like the way it looks.

Remember, the fish care about these things, in this order:
1. Presentation
2. Size/proportion
3. Color/cosmetic detail
Where do "eyes" fall on that list?

If it's dumbbell eyes we're talking about you could make a case for 1,2 and 3.

But we're not talking about dumb bell eyes, we're talking about adhesive backed, just-for-looks eyes.

I like a nice mani/pedi.  I want to look my best in the fish porn photos.

Yeah we are, but we tend to wander around a bit.

surf12 foot gave me a very good answer - just use the dumbbells and forget the glue-on eyeballs.  snopro added that he dabs a bit of black paint on the plain dumbbell "just for looks" - which would be an interesting way to pass a rainy day.
