I'm really disappointed to have missed the gyotaku activity.  Did anyone take pictures of the finished fish prints?

Looks like a great time, camping, raffling, eating...just not kayaking the ocean.

Skidplate and I did make it out to the ocean Saturday. Whether or not it was a good idea… well… The sea was angry my friends!

Conditions were as predicted - bad. It was probably around the high end of what I would ever consider doing as far as ocean fishing goes. We tried to find fish while tucked into the lee of Boiler Bay, but nothing seemed interested save for one tiny rockfish I picked up. Water seemed a bit murky. So we decided to head out and hang with the big boats. Once we were out off Government Point we started to find fish but staying in the zonewithout snagging was tough. I was marking plenty of fish but the rockfish weren't too interested in what we were throwing and switching through many different presentations wasn't really an option. We did find a couple of cabbies and I picked up a decent ling.

One of the charter boats must have alerted the coast guard about us and a cutter came over to check us out. They made sure we knew the conditions were bad and getting worse and that the bar was restricted to 20ft vessels. I let them know we were keeping an eye on it and would not stay out for much longer. They instructed us to call the station after we made it back to shore just to let them know we made it back ok and moved on.

A little after 10am we headed in. It was pretty dicey with big wind waves hitting at our rear quarter, which required an almost constant over the shoulder look.

Nice pictures guys and sorry the big event couldn't happen this time. It's interesting to the salmon in there in July. I know there are some and you provided the  proof.

In case anyone was wondering why we needed insurance coverage this year..... it was Rawkfish's idea.  I thought he was worried about everyone else... seems he needed the insurance for his own poor decision making process and anyone he could drag along with him.   ::)

Not sure it was a bad decision on Rawkfish's part.
He had to get out there and "test" his Daiwa and Kokatat products in conditions most folks with sense in them, would just sleep in for.   :icon_thumright:

I watched Jeff and Skidplate from the Boiler Bay pull-out on shore for a while with binoculars. The swell looked to be about 6-8 foot. You guys were already with or near the PB's while I was looking. If I was in my normal physical shape I would have tried that. And Rawfish certainly has the experience and knowledge to fish water like that.                                                                                                                  Too bad the Coasties closed the bar. But that was their call and it is for the better good. It seemed like there were a lot of new faces at ORC , so I venture to guess that quite a few newer guys have limited salt water time. Probably was best to shut down our tournament to be on the safe side. We don't want or need to have any incidents or fatalities.
Bring on some more pictures if you have them. ..... keep this thread on track.
