I just stumbled upon the eventbrite for this, and it says sold out. Do volunteers have to sign up through eb or just the vets ?

OK, we should pretty much call this one good for Volunteers. All the kayaks we are hauling out should be spoken for by a Veteran or family member. We'll have around 8 Veteran Volunteers (Vets that bring their own kayaks), and around a dozen Civilian Volunteers. That puts our total number at around 40, which is probably a good place to cut it off.

Thanks to all the NWKA Volunteers for the awesome support! It's going to be a fantastic day.

We would just ask that the Volunteers check back on this post a day or two before the event. Early reports are that the road is still under some water, so the event site may shift to an alternate depending on how much precipitation/snowmelt we experience in the coming week. Stay tuned.

Thanks,
Anthony

Ugh! I just got off the phone with the ODFW manager that is in charge of that part of the island and he said that they are going to be CLOSING the GILBERT RIVER starting Monday April 24th. We will need to find an alternate event site.

The closure is due to poachers and rough handlers of fish. The Gilbert will reopen June 15 when the fish move out to feed on shad.

Well that sucks, the sturgeon event is one of the best... I guess better to find out now and not the day before or something. Is swan island too much of a paddle?

That's the likely spot to move the event to I reckon.

Well we aren't going to find another place to fish with less current so let's move the event to Swan Island.

What about the mouth of the Columbia? ::)

Judging by pictures I see on the interwebs, they will probably close Swan Island due to the rough handling of fish there too.

General Regs:

11.All undersized, oversized, prohibited species or unwanted fish or shellfish should not be removed from the water and must be immediately released unharmed.

Angling and Harvest Methods, Hours and Restrictions:

• Restrictions: It is unlawful to:
» Remove sturgeon greater than 54 inches fork length totally or in part from the
water.
» Not immediately release, unharmed, all fish not legal for retention, this includes tethering or tying a sturgeon to any object, including the shore, for take at a later time.

Sounds good. It's a bit longer of a paddle but should have some good fish.

So for those of us who have guided before, and yeah that's our primary function, but who haven't gone for sturgeon before, what's the setup to bring ?

Heavy boat/bottom fishing rod ? Or is a salmon trolling rod heavy enough ?

50# braid mainline, slider with 2 oz cannonball to a swivel and a 2' leader with an 8/0 circle barbless and a herring rig on 65# dacron ?

Am I in the right neighborhood in the gear ?

That'll work. I'd bring some 4oz if you have them too. Don't bring a salmon rod you'd be upset breaking, I had one snap on an oversize there. Bottom fishing rod will work too, just not as sensitive.

After much arm twisting from Islandson....I will be there too :)

What should I bring for stinky bait.  I've been sturgeon fishing before but not here.  Pickled squid?  Rollmop Haring?
Will trade oral favors for fish.
