Hoping to spend a week or so on Vancouver Island camping and kayaking. Any suggestions as to camp grounds?. I prefer low key smaller campgrounds if possible. Might try to get to Mouchat Bay.
Trying for last of Aug. early Sept. Lakes or calm Bays and maybe streams. Thanks

My wife and I spent two Weeks on Vancouver Island last year. One week at Port Alberni and one on Quadra Island at Herriot Bay. Both had nice campgrounds. The fishing was better at Port Alberni but a little windy. Quadra is more protected from the coastal winds but a little more touristy. We were there in June in time for the sockeye run but too early for the coho. Caught fish in both places but wish I had brought a downrigger with me.

Thanks for the info. Did you notice any smaller streams that could fish from bank?

One option would be to take the Ferry over with a stop over on San Juan Island for a day or two. San Juan County campground is fantastic and is right on the water. If you reserve site #18 you can pull your kayak right up to the campsite. Earlier in the year (May-June) the Orcas often cruise right by the campground twice a day. I can't say it's greatest fishing spot but it's still worth a visit.

Can you tell me which ferry I would take? I know the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria takes vehicles.

The ferry out of Port Angeles is the Black Ball ferry.  We're taking that one in July this year from Port Angeles to Victoria and it's a short trip.
We couldn't beat the deals offered on  http://www.bcferries.com/ and last year spent 4 days, 2 in Vicotria and two just cruising the Island from Port Renfrew to Cambell river.  We wish we would have passed on Cambell River and tried Tofino, but we haven't been there yet.  That trip we left Tsawwassen BC and landed in Sidney.  Different type of ferry and almost a cruise ship type.  Beautiful views through the islands.  The BC Ferry people were really helpful over the phone.
PM me if you want more or I'll send my number and you can feel free to call.

PS, we brought some extra growlers and traded jugs with local micro breweries, pretty fun if you like small brewery type pubs, friendly folks.
