New to AK

Hello,

I just posted my introduction for the interested reader but the long and short of it is that I am new to Alaska, Soldotna specifically and looking to learn about kayaking in the salt. I have an older Hobie Outback 2012 or so but just picked up my new 2019 Outback, can't wait to get it out on the water! I plan on doing a shakedown mission on one of the local lakes this week for trout before heading out into the salt.

I fished off the Homer Spit earlier this week and had a blast, landed a few flounder, missed several more bites jigging for bottom fish. But what really excites me is that while trolling hearing behind a flasher I had two opportunities at what I believe to be Chinook, the first was a bump and a few seconds later chomp chomp and then I set the hook, I know I should have waited or fed him some line but I'm learning. The second was a short strike that didn't come back, hearing was missing its tail when I checked my bait. I was trolling 6 oz banana weight, short bus flasher (chartreuse/silver), and helmet head green label herring. I was trolling about an hour before and after high tide, conditions on Monday were amazingly flat, Tues was what I'm guessing is more the norm breezy and about 2 ft once the outgoing started. Anyone know where I can find some larger banana weights? 

Really looking forward to fishing Whiskey Gulch in the near future, would enjoy some company. Happy to be here!!!

Whiskey Gulch should start to pick up for Kings in May. I will try to get down there in the next few weeks. Most any of us kayak fishers would love to have company.
 Could have been anything chasing you off the Spit but could have been Kings.

Hi and WELCOME to AK Kayak fishing!

I was down a couple weeks ago, it was flat, calm, beautiful and NOTHING at Whiskey Gulch just yet, but I will be going again in May for sure.   

Its time to start checking the forums again, as the Kings are for sure off the spit (watched a power boat score one there about 100’ offshore last weekend) and as Badger said they’ll be a bit farther up by Whiskey in a few weeks.

Hoping the halibut follow suit.
