I like my HX890 with DSC.  From another hobby of mine:  One is "NONE", two is "OK", three "Now you Have Something"

Remember, even though you have a DSC enabled radio, you have to set up your MMSI number.  Check out this short video:

I have a non-electronic compass on my hatch, my phone, and my Fishfinder both with GPS features.  Having GPS on the VHF isn't entirely necessary (even though I do).

I don't use the GPS on my phone.  I don't keep location services turned-on all the time and if you've ever been outside a cell service area when you tried to get a GPS location - well, it takes a long, long time.  DAMHIK.  So, for me it's the fish-finder, my VHF, and my compass.

I've been out in fog so thick that I couldn't tell where the sun was.  Twice.  The bright disk wasn't visible through the fog, there were no shadows, and everything glowed with the same brightness.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

I have a Standard Horizon HX850S. Includes GPS, MMSI, DSC, panic button. It's submersible and floats. Had it many years. Lives on my PFD when I'm on the water in kayak or boat.

Back a few years, I maintained a list of NWKA MMSIs in the "For Safety's Sake" subforum. I thought it had been stickered, but apparently not.
