Hello from Montana - Looking for recommendations...

Hi there!

Back when we lived in Northern CA (we moved in 2007), my husband did lots of kayak fishing. He still does here in MT, but it is a lot less and obviously the ocean is too far away for the type of day trips he used to do.

I'm trying to work out a trip to the Northern Oregon Coast for Spring Break in mid-March. He'd really like to do some fishing for Rock Fish (is it open in March???). I'd like to take our two kids to explore tide pools and other interesting things. I'm hoping for some suggestions that include an easy beach to launch from that have some people pretty regularly (for safety). I'm also searching for a buddy who maybe would like to fish with him.

We're planning on using a VRBO.

Welcome skilikea, the weather in March will be iffy but there may be some windows to fish. Depoe Bay is an easy launch, just have a radio and watch for boat traffic but it's usually pretty easy. Bottom fishing should be open for retention except for Cabezon which usually opens in July. Watch for open invites like the one they had yesterday for Depoe or post up before you head over to see if anyone is thinking about going. Minus tides for tide pool exploring. Use the search button to find info, lots of topics have been covered in past threads.

Depending on your timing I’m in Tillamook, Tillamook Bay is a good alternative if the ocean isn’t fishable. I have two native propels but currently lack a rig to tow my 3/4 ton trailer with, will loan one out for a tow  ...... tides determine if the bay is fishable. What’s your timing.
