Two more people died at Netarts Bay.   They were not kayakers but the unfortunate circumstances do help to illustrate the preparation and precautions needed to operate safely out on the water.  https://katu.com/news/local/2-dead-after-boat-capsizes-off-oregon-coast
"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

I’ve seen hundreds of pb’ers not wearing life jackets when in Tillamook bay, when I’m on my buddy alumiweld salmon trolling I have one on, kinda hard to put it on when your treading water in 50 or so degrees of water.

I rescued a pal in 2016 who fell off his Hobie Revo while trying to have a pee, during the last week of January at Point No Point in WA, the water temp was 47, he was in for about 20 minutes and could not pull himself onto his boat.  I grabbed the back of his PFD and pedaled to shore, it was about 300 yards.  He was seriously hypothermic, got him into a truck with heater on full blast, got him into dry clothes, he was OK to drive home after an hour of warming.  He was an overweight guy with a gut that prevented him from pulling himself over the gunnel.  Hardest pedal I ever did with him alongside the boat, he could not hang on to my boat as his hands were numb. Thank God for the Mirage drive, a paddle yak would not have allowed me to get him ashore. He was able to stretch a leg onto my boat to get him somewhat out of the water while I pedaled. Sad ending, he died of colon cancer a couple years later.

Apparently no immersion gear....

Yeah, you could say that... in the video it looks like all he's wearing is a pair of swim trunks and a PFD... in a SinK... with no spray skirt... that has a bunch of water in it... with no pump visible...  ::)  :police:
