Jurassic Park in powerboat yesterday with 2 friends. A male security guard came out immediately and told us we couldn’t approach any closer to dry dock. We had to stay 40’ way, he had us back up a little then told us we were good where we were. 1/2 hour later a female security guard comes out, takes pictures of us and says we need to be 30 yards away. We asked her if they could be consistent, we moved further and asked if this was ok.  She said “I’m calling the Sheriff” and walked away. We thought: well this could be fun, and waited for hours...with our poles in the water.

In 6 hours we went around that whole basin and probably marked a thousand fish.  Not a single fish was caught, not a single sturgeon breached the surface. Not a single other sturgeon fisher was out there. Offered herring, anchovies, shrimp, sand shrimp, brined sand shrimp, squid and one fisherman, all to no avail. Water temp 47, incoming tide.

Fished there in kayaks about two weeks ago.
Was probably 40' from dry dock, maybe less.
Saw a security gurad on the dock, never said a word.
Metered fish everywhere, no breaches, no bites.
Constant nibbles, pike minnows maybe?
Used squid, chovies, and sardines.
Only fish we saw the whole day was a big early springer getting eaten by a sealion.
Guess it's just a matter of who's on duty and what kinda day they are having?

A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

What's the law in Oregon considering approachments? Sounds like the guards might need to be educated.

The gaurds are speaking to folks on behalf of the shipyard or ship, that is complaining about fishing near dry dock 5.

There was an interaction between the head of the shipyard and mouthy canoe fisherman in January that really irritated the folks at the shipyard.

They are currently in the process of considering barricading the hole by dry dock 5 with floating metal barriers with barb wire marked no tresspassing, in place of the yellow oil catches currently. The metal barriers are on site already.

There are other spots that produce around swan. This guy made a video catching them up by the mercy ship.

That's who I went with recently.
He told me about spots all up and down the river that have produced well for him.
He actually prefers not to be right up by the dry docks.
We only fished close to there at the end of the day, cause we had gotten skunked everywhere else.
The river was still very high and muddy,we were just itching to get out.

Is fishing near the dry docks easy? Yes.

Is it the only place that produces? Not by a long shot!

Use your fish finders, explore the river!

This time of year the best fishing shifts out on to the main river. The Toyota Hole is very productive this time of year.

https://homeport.uscg.mil/Lists/Content/Attachments/1924/NVPZflyer.pdf These are the "official" rules but at the EOD it is the determination of the Captain of the vessel. If is says USS or USNS on the back this applies.

Ok, so the guards are probably federal protective services contractors? Sorry my not being familiar with that place, so didn't realize it was a possible naval station.

I did that once after eating a bunch of taco bell and lighting a joint.

"A venturesome minority will always be eager to get off on their own,
and no obstacle should be placed in their path;
let them take risk, for God sake, let them get lost, sun burnt, stranded, drowned,
eaten by bears, buried alive under avalanches -
that is the right and privilege of any free American."

Well, chit . Looks like you need a platoon of heavily armed marines just to park and launch there.

And, homeless or not, that's just sad. Lost home and transportation .

Worked for an armored car company 25+ years ago in San Antonio.  We had 4 of our staff ( nobody was called an employee) who lived in their vehicles. 3 by choice because it was the only way they could afford college tuition. Company allowed them, well Terminal Manager allowed them, to park in the fenced holding area 6 nights a week, or days, depending on shift. And, they had a covered area to use as an outdoor kitchen. Never once had an incident like that, even in coldest part of year.

I miss Henry. ( terminal manager) In an industry and company full of jerks, he was the better man
