Yeah,
I have a downrigger, which I love, but absolutely will not use when there’s any current.
If you get wrong-sided, and snagged on something, it can flip you before you even realize what’s going on.
I switched out my steel cable to 200 pound braid, and have multiple knives within arms reach, but I still don’t think it’s worth the risk.
I only use my rigger for fishing suspended in “flat” water.

I am not available this Sunday, but I should be down there the following week if things work out that way.

Sorry about the slow response time!

Downriggers in the Willamette = Very bad day

Yes, the front page tutorial is a great starting place.  It's important to learn how to spin herring in the NW.  Yes, there are a bunch of other things you can use but herring is the most consistent producer for Spring, Summer and Fall fish.  https://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=33

Let's tentatively shoot for this Sunday 4/3.  Tentatively because we'll want to keep an eye on the turbidity and wind.  No sense fishing all morning if the fish can't see our bait.

Launch time would be 6:30 so we'd wanna hook up around 6:00AM.  Location will be dependent on the size of our group.

Please have appropriate immersion gear and a PFD!

Here's a picture of one of our members on his 1st Springer hunt with me, a couple of years ago.

Let's get bloody!

I was planning on the Willamette.  That said, I'm open to fishing Davis bar or the Dead Zone.

Mark, do you use the USGS website to monitor turbidity? If so, what's the optimum FNU for fishing? What's the ceiling FNU for fishing? How about wind?

Count me in for Sunday. Thanks for putting this on. Fish or no fish checking out new fisheries is always a hoot. Especially in the company of folks knowledgable of that fishery.

Yes, specifically I use this link for the Willamette turbidity:
https://or.water.usgs.gov/will_morrison/monitors/will_morrison_tbdy_14.html

I'll fish anything up to an FNU of 10 but, of course, I prefer to be in the 3-5 range.

As for wind, it depends on where I'm fishing and the direction of the wind.  My favorite spot forecast site is Iwindsurf.com.  For the Portland area this link should work:
https://wx.iwindsurf.com/map#45.568,-122.711,10,2

Anybody have a preference as to Willamette vs Columbia?  I'm partial to the Willamette, but flexible and experienced on the Big C too.

You Northerners get all the good stuff.  Not possible for me to be there, Mark, but THANK YOU for the link to iwindsurf.com.  That's a great tool.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

The Sellwood area appears to be putting out fish, so lets plan on meeting up at the Sellwood Riverfront Park at 6:00AM on Sunday 4/4.  Having a cart helps, but if you don't have one yet, it's not a show stopper.

I'll be spinning herring and/or prawns behind an inline flasher with an 8oz cannonball weight, on a dropper.

Any questions?

thanks for putting this on!
This may be futile since it seems most can go Sunday, but I'd be interested in going Saturday.

cheers!
