I'll start this thread in hopes that some of the folks out there today get into some good fish.

I got my ass handed to me by the ocean yesterday, should have just bottom fished and come in, wind added to the NW swell and turned it into a total washing machine day, got into a grass/weed line at 150' and had 3 takedowns that didn't stick, then set a personal best for barfing that far offshore.  Got back to Fogarty at low slack and pulled my drive too late, bending a mast just enough to cancel my Friday plans.  I'll be back there next week.

Here's a combo image from about the same time both days, waves were really breaking over the reef on the right yesterday, not so much today...

some familiar yaks launching this morning on a much nicer day.

Tips for Fogarty:  Beach wheels required.  It is a surf launch but somewhat protected.  When you go to pull your Mirage drive, it's "click, click, pull" not "click, slip, ruh roh".

Another factor to consider is tide.   If that's the same time on both days then the tide won't be the same, it should be about an hour off.   Having an extra hours worth of tide coming in would also reduce how much waves break on that reef.

Wow sorry to hear about the drive. Sounds like a rough time out there. I hope it calms down soon. Stay safe one and all

my approach to straightening them is to carefully clamp in a solid vise and use about a 2' long steel pipe to gently apply significant force.  Don't go too far, sneak up on straight and spin the rod in a drill to check it.

A good thing about North Fogarty.
There's usually a teenage kid willing to help drag your boat up the beach.
At about 170 feet we started seeing lots of marks.
This nook came shortly thereafter.

Nice job getting into salmon.
I think your nook is a coho kind of nook

Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

Good to see you on the beach this morning Roger! Bummer about the bent mast on the drive. You missed a beautiful ocean. The salmon fishing wasn't nearly as hot as a week ago. I trolled all the way out to 200 FOW before the temperature broke 50 degrees. Had a few drive-bys, lost a coho, then landed a 6 pound hatchery coho. Trolled a while longer, and hooked into a 14 pound butterball Chinook. That Chinook was a firecracker! She peeled off over 130 feet of line straight down.

All my action came on a Brad's Cut Plug in Hot Melon, 30 ft of line on the counter, 10 oz cannonball.

I got two takedowns on a swimbait behind a 360, 16' on the line counter, and two takedowns on Brad's cutplug behind a 360, 30' on counter.

So, I've known that while trolling bait, when ya get a hit, to leave the rod in the holder, till the fish starts taking line. I didn't figure it was necessary with lures, more exposed hooks, and not as much need to mouth/chew. So like a noob, I grabbed the rod instantly, and stopped peddling, each time. Probably why I didn't bring any salmon home.

When you get hit, peddle/paddle faster, and leave the rod in the holder!

Got my first yellow eye, quite a chunk, released of course.

Went home with one lil ling.

Beautiful day tho.

Thanks for everything Clay, had fun with you n Bob n Tim!
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Good to meet you Cameron! Yeah, even with lures, you want to keep pedaling forward with the rod in the holder until the fish starts taking line. That's when you know they've turned their head, and the hook is lodged in their mouth. Even still, coho are notorious for pulling "hit n run" moves where they'll bury the rod, then come off right as you're about to put your hands on it. Just comes with the territory when fishing coho on the troll.
