Jim Sammons recently sent around a video he did documenting some serious surf launch carnage including a bit of a discussion about what went wrong.

Enjoy!

Any dumping surf like that along the Oregon coast?  Most places I have been in Oregon have such a gradual slope to the surf zone that we just get sets of rollers instead of one dumper.

Bayocean peninsula?  Do you mean Cape Mears spit that forms the west side of Tillamook bay? The former site of the town of Bayocean?

I've seen a lot of bad launches in my day but man... that's easily the worst. If you want to launch through some heavy surf like that you've got to wait out the sets and CHARGE!!!!

I've seen a spot north of Depoe Bay, south of Lincoln City that has a shore break. It's the beach at Fogharty Creek State Park. I checked it out an hour or two after a high tide and it looks pretty easy on the north side of the big rock that splits the beach in that area. Wheels are a must as there is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the beach down a nice path and over the beach. It's worth checking out as there is some great structure in the area. I was thinking about trying it out on Thursday or Friday of this week because the surf forecast looks pretty nice. I has a thread going on it a little while ago that had some pics.

THIS is a good one. I'm not sure if this should be here, "Don't ask me how I know" or the morning laugh. What ever the case, kids, don't try this at home or the beach (at least not like this) ;D

I saw that the other day on Jim Sammons website.  It almost looks like it was setup to be a hoax, as who in their right mind would have the ballz to even try to launch in that surf, knowing good and well of the odds of getting dumped.   :-\

I dunno man, you can't fake stupid. If they did, he did a fine job of it. I'm still laughing   :sign10:

(and remembering poorly timed shore break ::) )

What I love about this is seeing all the moral support he brought along with him. He's got his family watching.... lol!
