It appears that Idaho could possibly be a place I call home. What kind of fishing can I find here? Obviously bottom fishing for ling and rock fish is out. Is there any sort of salmon/steelhead run I can get into from a kayak? If I were to move there it would be near Ketchum. Anybody familiar with this area?

Trout will be your new best friends. I fished that area a bit as a kid and as I recall there were some great tout streams that you could float from a kayak. However, I think you will be pretty far from any type of salmon or steelhead that far east. Beautiful area though. Probably some good lakes fishing too but we just fished streams while we were there.  Did you get a new job out there?

I didn't get a job out there. I'm trying to move closer to my son. I hate his mom haha. I guess I'd be looking for work. Right now it's just an idea that I'm looking into seeing how realistic it would be to make the move. I just wanted to scope out the fishing scene.

Cool. Good luck with the job search! I'm sure your boy would love to have you closer.

The Salmon river produces some great salmon and steelhead every year.  I dont know if I'd take a kayak on it though.

You have trout all over the state and up north you have pike.

Up in Rexburg near West Yellowstone with my son this week and hitting the Snake. Don't have a yak here or too much time but we are trying flies and spinners.

Yum!! Beer battered northern.  I may be in touch sometime in the future.  Also, I heard they may open up Kokanee fishing on Lake Pend Oreille again because they culled enough lake trout to stabilize the population.

Zowwie! That some serious production, where was that and when? All we got was about a zillion mosquito bites. Saw trout rising but couldn't get a bite. Gave up after just 1/2 hour since we didn't have any repellant. Fished below the dam in Ashton. Wish we had time and a yak. The drift boaters were doing OK.

Like it was mentioned before, trout (bows, browns, & brookies) will be your friend in the rivers.  Lakers and Kokes in lakes.  Many other fish though to chase around.  If you want to be successful, use the yak in the lakes and slow rivers and buy a drift boat or cataraft for most rivers.  If you isolate your vessel to just one, you may find yourself doing more paddling than fishing?

Great fishing in the west though.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

These were on Lake Coeur d'Alene with a rainbow trout floating Rapala. I even caught a couple smallmouth with the floater haha. Find a bay on the lake and fish it, and you will eventually find pike. The smallmouth were kind of everywhere ;D This was June 15-20, 2011

My son got a tiny cutty last night. Only one we got in 3 evenings of banking it in the Snake. Still nice to see him land his first non-sea run Cutthroat. Heading back to Sac tonight and hope to yak fish some lakes around Auburn over the next week. Got a few NCKA contacts who've generously given us some tips on bucket mouths.

Ling Ling, yes I live a couple hrs from Ketchum,  there are rivers and lakes full of trout, bass, walleye, perch, and others. Yes there is steelhead runs in different areas, kokanee in Anderson ranch reservoir they run up the river around labor day usually, and we have amazing smallmouth bass fishing in the snake river. I hold monthly bass derbies in the snake staring about April.

I can answer this question. I am a football coach/ sponsored hobie fisherman from Alabama. I moved to Idaho to coach in June and I've had the time of my life. People here treat smallmouth like a trash fish! I've had many 100 fish days. There are many lakes loaded with large and smallmouth bass. 10 pound plus rainbows are no big deal, tiger muskie, perch, 6 more trout species, different species of salmon, sturgeon...anything you want to catch in freshwater basically. The bass fishing is phenomenal.  Bassmasters magazine just named Coeurd'lane as one of the top 12 lakes in the world! Don't tell anybody else though.
