Howdy, everyone. I see people are noticing the GOAT board issues. bsteves is going to look at it as he has time. IIRC from looking at it last year, the ranking is correct but the fish are wrong. Note that if you refresh the page the fish will change.

If your dev didn't save the application's db credentials in environmental variables I would be the leader right now. You guys have a massive security hole right now over https -> https://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/

It's really kind and mature of you to point that out publicly instead of letting us know so we could rectify the problem.

This system has been built and maintained by volunteer labor and has honestly outlived its original purpose. We can either all work together to keep it going as best we can, or we can not have AOTY. Those are the options.

AOTY 2021
My goal is to come up with more and better prizes than last year. Please sign up early and let's get this party started! I guess it is already started, but barely. Only 5 fish on the board.
I have confirmed with Nomad's Fishing Adventures, that he will again be donating a seat on one of his guided fishing trips!

I was able to meet up with Drifter this weekend for a few minutes and get my prize box - man there's a lot of stuff in there! THANK YOU for the awesome prizes in 2020, in spite of everything that was going on.

Mrs. Redbeard already stole the hoodie and t-shirt  ;D

*HOW donation complete*   wOOt!!!!  Excited for 2021.  I had a good plan last year for what fish to target and when, but life happens and I didn't quite take advantage of the trips I had to put AOTY-eligible fish on the board.  I hope to catch more 'keepers' this year, and also end my salmon drought ASAP.

Thanks for organizing this, guys.  What a great tournament, for a great cause.

There are prizes in route from Pro-Cure, Pro-Troll, Yak Attack and more!
I am working hard to get more and better prizes across the board! The sun is shining, Springers are starting to show up, I caught 2 largemouth bass last weekend! Let's get more people signed up! Please?!?

I picked up a new sponsor, and our 1st fly fishing dedicated sponsor! Sawtooth Fishing Co. https://sawtoothfishingco.com/

They are out of Idaho and will be helping me to get more people interested, or back into contention for kayak fly fishing!

Great to hear about the fly-fishing sponsor. We've had a few in years past but it would be great to get more people involved. I am enjoying fly fishing more from the kayak each year, although sometimes it's hard for me to set down the gear once I'm out there. I'd like to do more on the SUP, since it's a good platform for that.

It is good news.  Good job, Drifter!

(Cap'n, if you need lessons in casting flies while seated, let me know.  I don't always stand up when bank-fishing since Scott taught me the technique. ;D)

Now lets find someone who'll donate a couple of fly reels.

Oh, and I reckon I gotta sign up for AOTY again.

I have the dubious advantage of not knowing how to cast properly in the first place, so casting while seated hasn't seemed particularly more difficult to me. I can usually get the fly where I want it (eventually) I just haven't been catching. Also, I need to put more time in. It's too hard [edit:] not to switch back to hardware when I know the fish are there.

I've worked very hard at not learning how to cast.  Just ask any tree.

I understand about switching back to conventional gear.  There have been days when the fish were there and intent on ignoring everyting I offered. I always swear I'll bring a spinning rod with me the next time I go, but I haven't.  Not yet.

Thanks for your continued work on this, Drifter! Glad to see so many great sponsors coming on board.

I know a lot of you have tried Big Hammer swimbaits already, but I see a lot of new people on the board, so I'd like to take a minute to shout out to Big Hammer for supporting us through the years and give a tip to folks new to the salt: Lots of plastics will work well for our nearshore saltwater species, but I always have Big Hammer swimbaits with me. I rig them ahead of time on 2-4 oz. triangle ("shad") jig heads and a little super glue to hold them on. The tail action means you don't have to do anything - I catch most of my fish on those while dead-sticking, drifting, or slow-trolling (controlled drift) with no rod action. I've caught my best rockfish and some of my best lingcod on them.

If I could only take 2 baits out with me on the salt I would take Big Hammers and Lancer Jigs.

After a significant delay in transit, the package from Pro-Troll arrived today! Two dozen E- chip flashers, and 12 E-Lures.Thank you Anthony on the assist in getting the package delivered.

Hopefully we get more people entered into AOTY!

Come on folks, all it takes is a donation to HOW!

You don't even need to enter a fish and you will get a prize package at the end of the year. Size does matter, so the size of prize package depends on your ranking in AOTY.

Drifter2007 you have my undying gratitude for the hard work, perseverance, and dedication to your "assignment" in helping with AOTY. And still find time to wet a line and climb the leader board ladder.

HOW will get another donation and AOTY will get another competitor, thanks to Donald and Joe whose donations to me went almost entirely to my 2nd Amendment Rights with new gun purchases but I reserved enough for HOW too. Support the troops!

I'm already plotting new Waypoints for underwater reefs and pinnacles that, from scuba diver videos, show to be loaded with Rockfish, Greenling and Lingcod. The new Fly Fishing Sponsors you mentioned have invoked my intention to work those pinnacles from the Hobie with my AMA outriggers for stand-up fly casting. Charter boats use to offer rockfish fly fishing trips years ago up here. So I know it can be done.

The Hooligan (smelt) and herring are beginning to migrate up Cook Inlet on their spawning run which pulls huge barndoor halibut into 20-40 feet of water and I'm intent on breaking that century mark from a kayak before I die. 92 lbs was a close call but no cigar. LOL

So again, my hope is to be a competitor this year and not just a participant. The ALASKA Forum Board is DEAD! No posts since July 2020. OMG! Rudy where are you? HA. Well hopefully I'll be posting some entries in the forums to stimulate the Alaskan contingent to get out there on the water. (Got sidetracked on a major repair job at the homestead last year.)

I'm really impressed with the 'prize list' from all the sponsors you have conjured up and continue to enlist more all the time. THANKS.  You deserve an award for all your effort.

Fish on....soon~!  We are still in breakup with ice still on the lakes. But saltwater is available.

Pretty darn nice poles! Show B N M poles some love people!

Well Drifter you now have more sponsors than we have AOTY competitors.  Your value to the cause has exceeded the sum of your parts. KUDOS!

Come on folks, a worthy cause to support, plenty of rewards distributed to participants, and an opportunity to get your accomplishment "engraved" in the annals of history for whatever species you have entered. Think of it as a legacy your grandkids can refer to as they engage in kayak fishing in the future.  ;)

Keep your hooks sharp.

Hey KK, I sent a solicitation request to the Kachemak Gear shed this morning. If you happen to be in the area and wouldn't mind stopping by there it could really help! I try to make an in person visit when I can and it really helps gain sponsors. I will print out one of the personalized letters and take with me.
I could send you the letter I sent them. As our o ly current AK participant this would probably be really good for you! Wink wink.
Thanks!

You have my addy. Fire away. I hope to get down to Homer in the next week or two so that would be an opportunity for me to stop by if you haven't heard from them by then. Keep me posted. I need to hit the water for a feeder king and also see if there are any pollock left around the dock pilings for halibut bait. Rumors are the cycle has run its course (climate change?) and there are very few hanging around now.

BTW, I'm working on a prototype UW cam system to take on the kayak as a Drop Down and Record view while drifting a reef, then retrieve the camera and play back the video right on its self-contained screen while still in the waterproof housing. Almost as good as realtime! If the system works I'll make up a DIY post. Also working on a system with the original GoPro Hero and Hero 2 cams I have that have housings good for 200 feet deep which should put me in the Yelloweye and lingcod zones complete with one of my 300' diving lights. I'd have to remove the SD card and swap it to my tablet to review the video but that isn't a problem on a calm dry day.  Also working on a "strike cam" system but there are a number of bugs to work out in engineering for kayak limitations. It would be a good prize to donate to the competition if I can perfect it. Maybe next year.

Here's a Tip:  Send out an intro contact to The Fish House in Seward. They are the #1 tackle, bait, fishing info, and charter services store in town. Right on the Harbor too. I filmed a number of trips back in the 90's for them. Longtime family operation. https://www.TheFishHouse.net/ (https://www.TheFishHouse.net/)  Attention: Mark Clemens
With Seward and Resurrection Bay being one of the most popular kayaking destinations in Southcentral it would be fitting for them to become a sponsor since there are plenty of kayakers fishing around town when the silvers arrive. And even for the sockeye that show up very soon.  All their contact info is on the home page.

I like the cut of your jib. Keep the home fires burning. Please share with us your youtube handle so we can see all that awesome uw footage!

Even if it weren't a first-rate saltwater rod, Id want it for the rod tube.  Who wouldn't want something with "Moonshine" on the side, in big letters?

This is a good one, Drifter.  Excellent work.

Another New Sponsor has joined AOTY, or rejoined as I believe they sponsored us a few years ago.
Mack's Lure! I am sure everyone has used their products at one time or another, but they are one of the leading trout, kokanee, salmon, and walleye lure producers!

Another nice score!  Now, take a deep breath, back away from the computer, and take a day off and go catch some crappies, catfish, and bass.  You deserve it.

**NEW SPONSOR ALERT**

Hook Rash fishing products. https://www.hookrash.com/

They make crank bait protectors so your lure doesn't get all tore up from the hooks swinging around. They also have some stick on glow strips that I think would be really nice for deep water fishing.

They have sent 4 $25 gift card codes as well as a $100 monetary prize donation.

So check them out and show some love for HOOK RASH!

No finer definition of dedication to the cause than your performance at this task. Bravo!

And yes, I got that goose egg off my back. Nasty WX though up here, windy all the time, 10-25kts on any given day. Fronts coming in one after another.  I could use some of your determination to gitter done come hell or high water.

Congrats on getting on the board.  I'm guessing you have plans to upgrade the little fella. ;D

So many good scoring opportunities up there.  You could win the whole thing.

LOL, <<seriously!
Yeah the "potential" is there but there are a LOT of ordinary, i.e. plain old average fish, to sort through for that one that would make a difference and we have a very limited window of opportunity with such a short open water season. So I think you West Coasters' positions on the standings are safe from us.
I've decided that a more suitable challenge for Alaskans or myself would be to focus on specific species to go for the top spot of record.   ;)  I spent a half hour on the phone with the manager of our hatchery today getting data on growth rates of our rainbow and arctic char that are in our lakes. Was worth the effort as I now have some locations with a potential 32" char (top spot) and another with 25+" rainbows (200 pts) swimming in 15 feet of water....perhaps easy prey for my fly rod!  And OF COURSE that top spot for halibut will be mine before the summer is over.  ;D  I'll be fishing 2 to 4 pound whole baits!

Last year, the grand prize was a very cool plaque that was made by our neighbor NCKA.

Will this year have the same prize? From the same artist?

Any way to get a second or third prize with plaques made by the same artist?

I really dig that artwork. Maybe if we had some cool t shirts to go with it?

I have been in contact with Sean and he is working on the NWKA plaque as well as a bunch for NCKA. He has some pretty cool art work for sure.

I set up the BCS with the same format as the AOTY so if you attend the shootout you can potentially post 7 species in one day. The reservoir is huge and holds many big fish. Merz got his PB large mouth bass at this years event.

My advice to anglers that want to win is to start early and fish areas where there is potentially multiple high scoring fish of different species in the same body of water or near by.

+1

(My fisheries are just getting started up here!)  ;D  Out of curiosity I just weighed out my saltwater sandlance flies. Most are running 1/10th to 2/10th of an ounce. Enough to cut through the wind on the back cast.  Now, where did I see those birds working that bait ball.
