Title: What's your favorite video editing software?
Post by: pmmpete on January 28, 2019, 02:52:13 PM
A lot of members of this forum take video footage while fishing and edit it into impressive and entertaining videos.  What's your favorite video editing software?  I want to start doing some video, and need to choose some editing software.  I'm more interested in software which is easy to use than I am in software with a lot of complicated and high-powered options.

I use Sony Movie Studio. (I think it's called VEGAS Movie Studio now, same thing.) It's basically VEGAS Pro light. There is very little that it can't do that you'll ever miss and it's relatively inexpensive. The only thing I really wish I had that I don't is the ability to ramp up or down to/from slow motion. (For example change from 60fps to 20fps across 2 seconds instead of instantaneously.)

(That's for Windows. I don't use Macs so I have no idea there.)

But mostly I like that because I grew up in the Sony family of editing tools for audio and video, so it is familiar. Most of the usual suspects have most of the same features at a given price point, so it really comes down to what you can learn to use and that might mean using something that you're familiar with instead of what someone else likes.

I will say that unless you're really gung-ho don't bother getting some expensive editing suite right away; buy a toy first and play with it for a while and see if you really find that you need things that you don't have.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing something from you soon!

I used to use the free software from GoPro but they stopped supporting it and when I formatted my PC I couldnt get it anymore so I went and looked for something else.  Someone told me about VSDC which is a pretty powerful FREE video editing software.  I only started using it so I only know the basics so far but I really like it so far.  I had to watch some YouTube videos to learn how to use it but once I watched them I got the basics down pretty quickly.

I find Shotcut to be very powerful and relatively easy to use. https://shotcut.org/ It is and opensource (free) which appeals to my wallet.  But unlike "free" non- opensource software, it does not inundate you with ads or try to get you to give up your deepest held secrets hidden within your computer.

Apparently it's been a few years since I looked for free video editors because those both look pretty good! Nice to see more free options out there.  :banjo:

I haven't done it yet but this will be the year I make the jump into video. :o

Good ones so far.  I tried to find a free editor last year and discovered three more with good recommendations.

I was not a fan of Hitfilm Express, but I may have to check out the other two.

I've tried using Quik when they stopped supporting GoPro Studio and it's ok to make a quick video but that's about all.  I've used it just to put together quick teaser videos and for a couple of HOW videos but for any decent video over a minute or so I use VSDC.

I use online editor because I do not have enough storage for all my videos and my PC is not powerful enough to render, cons it is around $250 per year.

Thanks for all of your suggestions about video editing software!  The good news: people who responded to my inquiry suggested a number of different kinds of video editing software which they like.  The bad news: there was no consensus about what kind of video editing software is best, so I need to check out a number of different kinds of  software.  I was hoping that two-thirds of the people who responded would say "Get XYZ software, it's terrific," which would have made my choice easy and obvious.

I hear you. But the lack of consensus is mostly because they mostly do all the same things, so it comes down to personal preference or that one must-have that's really important to you but not to everyone.

The good news: you'll probably be more or less happy with any of them to begin with! Let us know what you land on.

I looked.  They do not make video editing software unless you want to create animations. http://www.xyz-software.com/default.asp?PAG00_CODE=PRD001  ;D  ;)

Hah!  I had no idea that there is a brand of software named XYZ Software.  I should have said "get _____ software, it's terrific."
