Title: Henneguya salminicola in Puget Sound Coho
Post by: bogueYaker on October 27, 2022, 10:47:13 AM
My coho fishing the past two years was all on the east side of MA10 between Meadow Point and the MA9/10 line. Last year I only noticed Henneguya salminicola (tapioca) in a few fish, but this year, I'm discovering that practically every fish has at least a few cysts. Most were obvious when I filleted the fish, a few cases only apparent when I slice my fish thin right before bagel deployment.

Just wondering if other folks are noticing higher prevalence of tapioca this year. FWIW, both years I visually inspected fillets after portioning and before vacuuming, and fish from both years were largely prepared the same way (gravlox). So while it's totally possible that I just failed to notice the tapioca last year, I don't rate it as very likely... I slice my lox pretty thin and tapioca sticks out like a sore thumb.

Huh....we fished the same areas this year, I filled a few cards, and only noticed it in maybe few or five fish this year. I generally inspect the fish closely upon processing and afterwards.

I've filleted 14 fish this season, 13 of which were Coho taken from the Seattle area.  I only found two cysts total in all of them during the fillet process.  Granted we've only eaten a few of the fillets thus far, but haven't notice any cysts during that process.

Well crap. My sample size is smaller than both y'alls (holy shit DWB), sounds like I just got unlucky this year. Glad I'm an outlier.

Glad too that even with a few cysts, the overall munch is worth a little crunch.

Only weird thing I got this year was a white chinook.
