Couldn't decide for today bottom fish or salmon so I flip a coin and bottom fish won out. Launch at Sunset Bay it was a little bumpy but not bad. Wanted to test out a fly line anyway  that I had spliced   together and wanted to see if it would hold up? It did, lots of small blacks(10"-12") some big blacks, a green rock fish and the mother of all holy grail Cabby City. Ended up catching 8 cabbies one right after another (16"-18 1/2") boy was I stoke.

Love the pectoral fins on the cabbie.
All caught on the fly ???
  Nice job
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Nice cab.

I'm curious if you prefer weighted line, weighted fly or both? I have read about some guys that are running T-20 with T-8 running line.

Yak Outback my setup is a sinking running line that is spliced to 15ft of T-20(600grs) with 3ft.of 15lb. straight mono leader. The sink rate is about 10" a second. Some of my flies are weighted some are not it just depends on how deep I want to dredge or the type of action I want.

Very nice.

In case you're wondering, that green rockfish is known as a grass rockfish (Sebastes rastrelliger).

bsteves it was funny when people saw it at the beach they called it a green rock fish and I told them it was a grass rockfish and that it was pretty common but people don't really fish for them and they look at me like I was crazy but they also told me that the blacks where black snapper and not rockfish and that I need to now my fish species more. When I told them that I studied marine biology and that these where their correct names all I got was "must have studied at Univ. of wack job" I think the flyrod really confused them too. It's really amazing that one fish can have so many names especially here on the central Oregon coast. Don't even get me started on Pacific halibut and Cali halibut that one was a 2 day nightmare!

I feel your pain.

I sometimes wish this was required reading...

The majority of people are clueless about rockfish ID ... i had a fish checker ask me what kind of rockfish the black and yellow one was .... i just stared at her for a couple mins trying to figure out if she was actually serious.

That rubber leg and bunny fly looks good, as does the hair brush- they sure help.

Let's get you started.  Sounds like a good story.  The two would appear to be hard to confuse.

Nice job on the fly caught saltys.  I've had some good mid to top water action on blacks but I've never heard of anyone crushing cabs on the fly like that.
