I haven't fished a buzz bomb before, but seeing that trophy...I will have to reconsider my strategies this fall and try for the AOTY buzz bomb tsar title!  Nice work!!!

I fished a buzz bomb for a little bit last week for bottom fish. No love at all from the fish.

What kind of buzzbomb is that?!

I thought these were buzz bombs:

Edit:

Ah, buzz bomb is both the lure and the brand and they make other jigs apparently.

So in order to win that sweet prize do you need to use a buzz bomb lure or merely a buzz bomb branded lure like the Zzinger?

Yes, just a Buzz Bomb product I believe was the intent. I just got a couple spinnows that I am excited for.

Question:

Who do I talk to about getting my fish verified?  I have had 2 entries pending since August 9th, and know that other fish have been added to the leaderboards since then. I'm guessing it's an oversight or someone missed an email, but wanted to check. Thanks!

I'll contact rustyski directly about his pending entries, so this is not specifically directed at him, but more just FYI:

There are several reasons why some entries sit longer than others. In no particular order,
  • The location is an area unfamiliar to whomever is approving fish at the moment. This means the judge doesn't have the rules memorized and is hoping one of the other judges that does will jump in. Eventually someone will look it up if needed.
  • The location is understood but some other aspect of "is this a keepable fish?" is in question.
  • The picture of the fish isn't great: not on a measuring board, length not clear based on picture, whole fish not visible, picture blurry, etc.

There's not much you can do about the first two: the volunteer judges try hard to keep up and it will get looked at eventually.

However, there is A LOT you can do about the last point. This has been one of the more challenging years for judging fish due mostly to lack of proper measuring devices. We really want to approve all of the fish that we can, and we don't think anyone is trying to be a liar, but if we let it go for one person then it sets a precedent for everyone else.

This is the only fishing competition I have ever been involved with that does not require a measuring device from a specific list. Our rules are pretty open on this because we want to encourage participation and we want people to have fun, and there is a degree of mutual trust because most of us are acquainted with each other. I'd really rather keep using the device I like instead of a particular one off the list, but a list might help alleviate this in the future.

So, the best thing that you can do is: get a good measuring device and take lots of clear photos. I know it's hard at times, especially on the water, but it is possible.

(If your fish does not fit on a measuring device the best thing to do is to put its mouth against a wall with a measuring tape flat on the ground under it. Take lots of photos from multiple angles. Consider the lighting? Will it be easy or hard to see this? etc.)

Update on the Buzz Bomb race: Jed posts a really nice kelp greenling caught on a Buzz Bomb!

Also, I got a 28" lingcod on a Buzz Bomb on Sunday at Pacific City. After playing with these for a few trips my impression is that they are effective if you work them like the instructions on the packages tell you to. That said, it's not yet a "confidence bait" for me. I do like having it in my arsenal.
