Title: Yakutat - Situk River - 7/1 through 7/6
Post by: Matt_K on May 14, 2009, 08:27:48 PM
Just booked a flight with a friend (25,000 miles on Alaska or NW or Delta, etc) from Seattle to Yakutat.

And also booked fishside accommodations ($35 a night cabins).

2 nights here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/cabins/yakutat/situk_lake.shtml

River details: http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/yakutat/resrc_mang/situk_fishing_intro.shtml

Historical Fish timing and counts (see bottom of page): http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/Region1/escapement/situk_weir.cfm

Plan is to catch and release or eat for the first 4 days, then rent a car for the last two, with the potential to explore new areas and fill up a cooler with ice and fish for the trip home if we want.

Anyone interested in joining? Plenty of room in the cabins. Any ideas for boat rentals or car rentals?

Should be fun and affordable...

I looked into Yakutat before...

Two questions:

Rental vehicle..  Sure you have one...  They are VERY Expensive in the summer in Alaska...  Over $1000.00 a week.

Secondly, those cabins, how are you getting to them...  I have learned that you require a water taxi or float plane to get to most forest service cabins, and again, they generally are not cheap..  Unless the cabin is real close to the town/city.  In Yakutat's case, you may be lucky.

Regardless, I expect to get a full report, so I can determine if I will head there next time, instead of Valdez.

Oh, one final question...You going to have access to yaks?
