I’ll be putting some effort into fishing Tbay for spring chinook in the next few weeks. I’ve never fished it from a kayak before and have only fished it from a PB once with a guide from Memaloose to Rock Point (no fish that trip). I was wondering about the tidal influence and any potential safety issues to be mindful of. Does the tide ever pull so strong it’s a safety concern or is there a safety limit for tidal swings? Any other safety pointers or pointers for fishing the bay in general would be appreciated. Thanks!

The current isn’t too bad in the upper bay.  The biggest hazards are the narrows between Garibaldi and Barview where the current can really rip and near the jetty on a bigger tidal swing.

Another challenge in the upper bay is actually finding the channel.  Easiest way is to go near low tide as a scouting run and make a bunch of waypoints near the center of the channel.
Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.
