Why would one chose the 1 1/2 " ball over the 1" ball. I'll be mounting a
GPSMAP440s. any suggestions. Also,what do you do with the exposed wiring hookup for the ff/gps when not using device? Won't it get corroded if exposed?

The ball size = strength.  unless you plan on using your FF as an arm rest, you'll be fine with the 1" ball
