Birthdays aren't a big deal for me but when my wife asked what I wanted to do for my 70th earlier this month, I decided it was time to try for a sailfish from a kayak. I had recently read about Deep Water Kayak Fishing out of Boynton Beach, Florida which was only about four hours from our other place in St. Augustine so I called up and booked a trip. Turned out it was only me and the guide, Eric Macdonald, who is also the co-owner. I figured I had about a 20-25% chance of hooking up with a sailfish and maybe a 75% chance of at least something substantial (King Mackerel, Wahoo, Tuna, etc.) The gods were smiling on me and I managed to connect with a sailfish. I did a very rough edit on some video supplied by Deep Water and have attached a couple of pictures. The video doesn't do justice to the adrenalin rush. It wasn't until the fish was beside the yak that the reality of how clueless I was about reaching down and grabbing the bill. I am sure it took an extra couple of minutes for me to build up my courage and to fast-learn techniques being shouted at me. It all turned out perfectly. The fish was released unharmed but probably a bit sore -- just like me. Needless to say - I had a very happy birthday.
