Title: Trailer storage boxes help
Post by: Guppy Tamer on February 18, 2018, 09:29:22 PM
I'm rebuilding an old trailer to be my kayak trailer.  I'm looking for some designs for locking wood boxes that hopefully aren't too complicated.  They should open from the side, not the top. I'll get some pictures upload later.

Thanks!

Well,  here is the progress so far. I have one box almost built,  but no pictures.

Here is what I started with.

You might find some ideas on the Tventuring DIY trailer site.  They haven't been as active as they were before Harbor Freight stopped selling trailer frames, but it may have some ideas you can use.

Getting closer.  I got the back doors put on tonight.  Still thinking about the long box up front.  Might build a sliding door to handle rough roads better.

What are you plans for if you want to haul a second (or even third) kayak on the trailer? I love the boxes as the storage is very handy, although I also love the flexibility of carrying multiple kayaks.

I am going to add bars across the top for adding a second level for our other kayaks. I think my wife's paddle board will be able to tie down on top of the hobie.  I will probably use unistrut to make mounting flexible. The mechanical engineers I work with said it would be plenty strong,  although they probably overestimated my woodworking skills!

Add a floor under the kayak and a sheet of plywood across the front of the trailer to keep road dirt from spraying all over your kayak.

Agreed! I'm planning on skinning it after it is finished with thinner wood, but it was easier to build and paint this way.

Almost done.  Mostly fine tuning and cleanup left. Ignore the mess.

You got the most out of that trailer! Impressive. Is there a thin skin going under the bottom center kayak?

Not yet.  Once I am finished it will be easy to add, but it made it so much easier to build/ paint/ wire with that opening.
