Taking your kayak off the side of the SUV is not a time for carelessness. My new to me Ride 135 is no petite mistress, and the rattle of sand/gravel made me think of an idea. While the kayak is leaning vertically on my rig I'll open the drain and get that out. Let me set my keys down...

Cue gravity...

I see it happening but can't stop it. Kayak slides along the roof line, along the side of the windshield and dispatches my side view mirror like an ORC angler clubbing a trophy bottom fish.

I've owned this boat 90 minutes.

Some 5 minute epoxy and duct tape are now holding it together.  Will it last, or did my new Ride just get me in line at the repair shop?

Wonder what I'll break next!
Kayak fishing?  I have no clue, but I'm doing it.

Hows the kayak? Its hard to tell from your post.

The first time I tried to load my adventure, I was by myself loading on a steep boat ramp and I broke my cars side mirror too funny enough! The kayak was completely fine besides a few scratches.

Oops, forgot to mention that the Ride is no worse for the wear. No issues at all, just needs a more responsible owner. I'm used to inflatable and trailered craft. I hope I'm not a slow learner with regards to car topping/unloading.

Car topping does take some getting used to for sure. The more you do it the easier it becomes it seems.

I'm short a side mirror and my other one is barely hanging on.

It's amazing to me how easy it is to load at the start of a trip and how impossible it is after a 12 hour day....and I'm only loading an outback on top of a civic. Lol.

Glad that I am not alone. Hoping the epoxy fix works over time. If not I'll be taking more hear from the house boss. What is that, five of us admitting to this already?  Club it is!

Paaleeese! Pay no attention to my damhik! Feel free to ask me anything. That's the only way to find out what not to do!

Guilty as well.
This OK Mali2 sheared off the passenger side mirror of my old volvo sw.

Having been stacking plastic on cars for a while now...
(Yes, the digital date and hair are chronologically correct)

Ive learned a tragic truth. As long as you are in this game, boats will fall.
Just a few weeks ago we heard the not so distant thunder of 2 T140s coming off the rack.
This was an experienced crew with a solid system.

When you mix fatigue, distractions, and/or any other contributing factor in human error, BOATS WILL FALL.
Its why they are made of plastic.
That being said, we all want to protect our toys and damage prevention is everyones concern.

Ive found that using a rubber bath mat when having to lift alone helps the boat from slipping until you can change positions and finish the load.
