I realize it's probably a bit early yet, but anyone have any intel on the herring run?

Funny timing. I just hit Clayman today with the same ?.  Trying to decide on this weekend. Kokanee @ Merwin, Yaquina for herring/crabs, shakedown on the Willamette chasing a unicorn. Weather too good to NOT be fishing.

. . .  and reading dampainter's post and checking MSW, Depot looks like it could be a nice ride on Sunday. Does anyone with better condition reading skills than myself have thoughts on the conditions?

I saw this post in a Crabbing in Oregon Facebook group back on 2/7/22, not sure how it relates to Newport though:

We had to sort through many females in Alsea on Saturday and came away with only 9 male keepers. BTW... it seems that there are big schools or herring or eulachon in the bay - I think that is a sign that steelhead will be entering the bay and swimming upriver.

In my humble opinion, if conditions hold true, should be a lovely day on the water.
I'd totally go if I could.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

I've heard multiple reports of some herring/sea lion activity in the bay this week. Friend of mine sent me video of sea lions ripping into some herring today, off North Bay Road. I'm not sure how thick they are yet. Driving over the bridge this afternoon, I didn't notice any obvious sea lion/bird/boat activity.

There are more sea lions in the bay this year than I've ever seen. Could be the makings for some big angler/lion conflicts later this month.

Kind of relates to the "Who has gone from a kayak to a power boat?" thread?  ;)

So this guy in the Crabbing in Oregon FB page said he got 100 herring in Yaquina Bay today.  Can't speak to his reliability just passing along what I read.

Got a boat bro…bunch of females but had a blast catching herring, that’s right people they are HERE!
Took home a couple dungeoness and a couple rocks and couldn’t be happier!! Probably a hundred herring…

Where do kayakers launch in Yaquina bay?
I have fished out there many times on a boat but I am new to kayaking.

Some people launch at the cove next to Hatfield Marine Science Center.   I launch over at nearby Massey Beach.

You can always use the South Beach boat ramp  ;D
Another place to launch is between the Rogue Spirits Cleaning station and the Rogue Brewery dock, there's a path leading down to an old abandoned launch ramp that's now gravel - pretty easy launch and never crowded.

Planning on trying to “fill a cooler” this weekend. Quick weather check seems the wind on Sunday could be less than pleasant. Not wanting to repeat the washing machine from last Sunday, what are people thoughts on. Sat v Sun

Also, there is a lot of “where to launch” discussion. I have only gone out of the marina with the big ramp. I see lots of other places folk are talking about. I have a decently heavy rig (AP120) so distance and incline are important. Suggestions?

Will be dropping a pot or two and hope to see some of y’all out there

Saturday morning looks decent to me. I'm about 50/50 to go, but hoping to make it out. If I go I'll be launching from Hatfield Marine Science Center. I don't know about launching there with a big rig.
