I know this isn’t kayak fishing but I figured you’d be the guys to ask. I’m going to be headed from the Bay Area in California back up to my place near Sandpoint Idaho. On the way I am planning on doing some fishing Oregon. Most likely along the Deschutes River and Columbia River as welll as any other spots that look good. It will probably take me a week to get thru Oregon with all my fishing stops, haha. How far up the rivers have the salmon made it so far? Will they be up into the Deschutes at this time of year? Are they ok to keep by the time they reach that point in there spawning journey. I have never fished for them once they leave the ocean so don’t know a lot about it. Or course I am not just targeting salmon and any fish I catch is a good fish. I did catch a decent rainbow near bend and lost a pretty good sized brown in the same area on the way down here a couple months ago. Any input and tips are greatly appreciated! Thanks to all!

When are you going? Maybe go up the coast instead. Should be salmon everywhere for a couple of months.

I will be on 97 until I hit 84 at the Columbia. I won’t have my kayak with me so I’m limited to shore fishing if I get along the ocean at all.

Bright and shiny salmon are near the mouths of the rivers, silly. You'll improve your chances for catching the best quality fish if you fish closer to the ocean.

That makes sense. I will make detour towards the coast on the way back down from Idaho.

Klamath Lake ( Rocky Point, Harriman Springs ) has huge trout (5 lb. plus) this time of year. You might consider renting a kayak. It's about 20 miles off 97.
