Anyone hitting Depoe or Fogarty on Saturday? Might not be as nice as the past few days, but still pretty darn nice forecast.

I am either heading east 1.5 hours to hunt deer in the High Cascades or west 1.5 hours to fish. I would love one more kayak day on the ocean this year.

My brother and I are planning on Depoe Bay. It'll be our first time out of Depoe on kayaks.

Make sure that you have your marine radio and call out to the harbor Master on channel 80 before entering exiting Depoe Bay. They don't  always answer, but. All out anyway.

+1. Before you're about to transit the Hole, announce on Channel 80 "Two kayaks, outbound, Depoe Bay". Wait 10-15 seconds. If you don't get a response, you're usually clear to go. Coast Guard doesn't typically respond to outgoing vessel traffic unless they see a potential conflict with an incoming boat. Don't dilly-dally in the Hole: cruise out as soon as you can and keep heading west. You can legally fish in the line between the Hole and the Bell buoy, but it's generally frowned upon as you're right in the way of the boat traffic. I usually head straight west til I reach the Bell, then I'll turn north or south to fish. If it's calm, you can fish inside the bay itself...just stay out of the line between the Hole and the Bell.

When inbound, I'll line back up with the Bell and the Hole, and steadily work my way back. When I get within 100 feet of the Hole, I hug to the right (south) a bit til I'm just outside the Hole. You can get a pretty clear view of the Hole from there. Then I'll announce "One kayak, inbound, Depoe Bay". Coast Guard will almost always reply to incoming traffic, and will tell you whether or not you're clear to enter the Hole.

You may already know all this, but I want to put it out there anyway. Some dude flipped just outside the Hole recently and didn't have or wasn't using their VHF radio properly. They waffled in the water for a while before Coast Guard picked them up. I wouldn't even entertain the thought of launching from Depoe if I didn't have or wasn't fishing with someone who has a working radio.

Thanks so much for the info everyone! much appreciated. I've been out on a power boat before but always appreciate additional information when it comes to kayaking. Definitely wasn't aware coast guard doesn't always respond to outgoing vessels.

I'm heading out of Fogarty if the forecast holds tommorow. I know it's been slow trolling out there , but it might be the last trip for the year as previously said!

Great day! Swell forecast help up with even lower winds.

We managed to limit on black rockfish but lings were elusive today, only managed to bring up one non-keeper. Heard salmon were good around the 300-400 ft, but we decided not to venture out that far this time.

There were two whales feeding close to shore not too far from us…such a spectacular show.

Already looking forward to getting back out!

Cheers 🍻
