Title: So where are all the reports???
Post by: bjoakland on July 08, 2010, 10:45:19 PM
I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been posting very much.  My apologies.  There's been a lot of fishin' goin' on - that's for sure - but not a lot of it by me.  I've had time and inclination to make a few trips out on my own, and done O.K. but nothing to scream to the hills about.   Yet.    :'( :-* >:D  All of my clients have been having good days, with no one skunked and the least number of fish caught in an outing at 3.  Not too bad considering the salmon haven't showed up in any real numbers yet.  We've been slayin' the flatties, and when appropriate, doing well on rockfish.  I've helped 3 clients land halibut in the last week as well, but I'm still not on the fish for myself.  I think I'm giving all my good fish juju to my clients.  Oh well, I'm still having a blast and I wouldn't trade it for the world.  There is great satisfaction in seeing someone new to kayaks AND ocean fishing pull up a 25" rock sole.  It's an entirely new and fascinating experience for them and number of people walking away with perma-grins is almost better than catching the fish myself.  Almost.

So, I recently made a 4 day camping trip out to a small island a few miles out from Ketchikan.  Beautiful place, lots of time spent sailing, which I've felt a strong desire to do, since I've spent a bunch of time paddling the boat around.  Yes, I did say paddle, and meant it.  I don't take my pedals out when I'm with paddle bound clients, as it would be unfair and difficult to justify, imho.  That, and it's much easier to go backwards or spin around when using just a paddle.  I'd recommend to any Hobie owner to spend a few trips without the pedals at all, and just use the plug they give you to block the drive hole.  They paddle surprisingly well, and I can easily control general direction by just leaning a little to make those slow directional changes.  Or, as Nanook would phrase it, edging.  I like it at least as much as a T15, though I only have 20 or so miles of paddling one of those as reference. (can you smell the political wording in that phrase?   ).

But to get back on topic, below are a set of links to some videos I took while on the trip.  They are completely raw and unedited, because I like my charming impromptu blurby moments of inspiration (or am I just too lazy?).

In any case, I'll let ya'll be the judge. ;D

The sun DOES actually set in Alaska -- at least for a little while

This is how haggard one can look after being stranded on a windblown island with nothing to keep you company other than a half rack.  Sorry, Brosephs, not the NattyIce.

Nice report Brian, Looks like it's been quite the experience so far. I'm sure reports with big fish are not far off.

That Adventure Island is pretty cool looks like a blast!

Hmmm, Salmon not showing up yet...Sounds promising for my trip in 35 days.....

I would rather get there just as they start to show up, than a day or two after they have left.

Nice pictures, but we need more fish porn....   ;D

Don't let the fishing in Ketchikan be the measure of what you'll find in Foggy Bay.  Last year the silvers weren't quite in force in Ketchikan, but I assure you, there were there in Foggy Bay.  Should be hordes of pinks showing any day now too.

I should probably clarify this a little.  When I say the salmon "aren't in,"  I mean that it isn't stupid crazy with fish flopping into the boat.  The charter guys are bringing more fish back every day, but with six or seven 6pack charters out at a time, every morning, there hasn't been a full tote sent off for processing yet.  So, yes they are already here, just not in huge numbers.
