Title: Orlando fishing?
Post by: Guppy Tamer on January 02, 2019, 09:21:47 PM
My wife needs to go to Orlando for work, so I decided to tag along for a mini vacation.  I was wondering if anyone here has had any fishing experience there or recommendations? I don't mind paying a guide/charter. Anything else I should do while I am there?

For some local info,  you might want to scan some area yak fishing forums.  I'm sure someone on these forums could provide you with some informed help.  I found these forums while researching yaks/gear.

Jax Kayak Fishing Forum (Jacksonville area),  Pensacola Fishing Forum.  You might have to register,  but it's easy.

This time of year can be hit or miss for just about everything. If you want saltwater, it's about an hour+ drive to the coast, and you can go either to Tampa on the Gulf side or Port Canaveral on the Atlantic. The deep water is closer on the Atlantic side if that matters to you. Back country on the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River is good. There's also good back country fishing in the Tampa/St.Pete area. If you want to try for freshwater, there are lots of lakes in the Orlando area. You can even fish the theme park lakes. One of the best fisheries this time of year is Atlantic sailfish down in the Keys, but it's an 8-hour drive from Orlando. Good luck.

I would book over to one of the coasts and do an inshore charter (offshore also awesome but more time and $). Typically a captain and a whaler or similar, all the gear, they know the place inside and out.  Saltwater fishing in Florida is typically ridiculous, lots of action and great game fish. Guides will have you completely set up, all you have to do is show up and bring a lunch. I have spent a lot of time on the gulf side but looking at the web looks like lots of options on Indian River, less than an hour from Orlando. I’d call a couple of the captains, ask them what is biting and what to expect at this time of year. You can get kayak rentals at a lot of these places but might be smart to learn the lay of the land from a boat first. Attached pic of my 11yo with a snook out of Captiva this thanksgiving.
