Mustang Survival Khimera PFD

(1/1)

rogerdodger:
I had my eye on this 'hybrid' PDF as one for the kayak that would be excellent in the water and for re-entry, easy to move/swim in, but with extra floatation if you needed it.  I also wanted a very thin PDF that I could wear on PB/driftboat, under a windbreaker.  It finally went on sale recently for $119 at Mustang and other online stores, I have not seen it lower than that.

So far, I really like it for all my non-ocean outings, I can snug it up real tight, rear foam is high enough to be above the seat back, and it carries the new USCG 70 rating.  The very thin foam provides 7 pounds of buoyancy which is enough to keep most people just floating plus a manual inflated front area that brings the total buoyancy to 20.5#.  The front area that inflates is not like the suspender inflatables but rather a rectangular area that stretches out the fabric over the foam in front, see the attached image for how it looks inflated.  It looks to me like re-entry will be easy with or without it being inflated, I'll be testing it both ways in cold water later this year when I, hopefully, recertify my annual "go anywhere" fishing pass with my wife.  ;D
