Title: Valdez 2008
Post by: polepole on January 10, 2008, 11:06:32 AM
Anyone interested in doing similar to what I did last year before the shark fun?  A drop off trip to a forest service cabin on Prince William Sound.

The guy I was with, YakontheFly is heading back up in late July.  JonS, from KFS, is going too.  It promises to be a good time at a very reasonable price.  Let me know if you're interested and I'll fill in the details and hook you up with YotF.

Of course if there is enough interest here, I just may lead a trip myself.

Cost is broken down as follows.  Need 6 people to get these prices.

~$500 each for water taxi r.t.
~$25 each per day for kayak rental
~$6 per day each for cabin rental split by between

Plus food, whatever your flight is to get there, and some lodging (camping is an option) before and after being on the island.

And there may be the option of fishing on the big boat on the way out and back because really what we're doing here is paying the cost of a 6 pack halibut charter and using that to transport out.

Thanks for posting this here Polepole,

If interested email me at yakonthefly@gmail.com

Right now looking at getting Port Chalmers Cabin...when it becomes available, otherwise, getting Green Island Cabin.

If interested, I would need a non refundable (Unless another angler replaces.) deposit for the Water Taxi.  Total Water Taxi cost is non-negotiable, and needs to be secured soon, as dates are filling for the guide.

    It is $3000.00 R/T.

As last years photos and story show, the fishing is AWESOME, and the scenery even more so.

I am definately considering this, however, I need to verify the amount of time I am taking off this year, it will be mostly unpaid vacation. What do you need for the deposit, and how many do you have planned at this point?

Well, plans are getting finalized.  Two others, JonS and MSGDan (From KFS Forums) have committed to the trip, leaving only 3 slots remaining.  (PolePole if you are coming that makes two slots remaining.

I just reserved the Port Chalmers Cabin, on Montague Island, in Prince William Sound for the 21st through 25th of July. (Today as the first day possible to reserve the Cabin, it cost $35.00 a night.)

According to local guides in the area, the waters near this cabin are excellent for Halibut, Lingcod, Salmon and various Rockfish.  The NOAA Charts show lots and lots of structure within a short paddle from the cabin, and because of its location on the leedward side of the island and with Green Island close by, it should be fairly protected in all but the fiercest weather.

Water Transportation has been scheduled, but has yet to be reserved ($500.00 a person is a party of 6).  I will need to get this taken care of soon, as this is the only cost of the whole trip, besides Airfare and Cabin Rental, that requires pre-planning this early, to ensure it is available.

Kayaks, Wilderness Systems Ride 135's have been reserved.

Everything else can be arranged at the last minute.

Right now I have half the party committed, possibly 2/3's (If Polepole comes he gets dibs.).  Deposit will need to be $500.00 for the Water Taxi, and we need to lock that in as soon as possible.  Yesterday would have been preferred!   ;D

I planned this time period so that peiople could have wekends to travel and spend only 5 days vacation...  I will stay the following week myself, through the 2nd of August...

Yup.  I signed on to the trip, something about that place is magical and I couldn't pass on it.  Anyone here still thinking about going?  I was thinking about doubling up and tagging another trip to the end of this one, possibly exploring another cabin.

Looks like we will have at least one opening for the follow on stay at Green Island Cabin.  (You get it yet Polepole?  If so, I would need to change the pickup date with Otto, and see how to get one person out and another back on another hali charter on the 25th) from the 25th through the 29th.  You would only need to catch a ride out with a Halibut charter.

Just a heads up for those interested...  Looks like we will have two or three more slots open up for the 25th through 29th of July....

This is the 5 days after the already full trip.  Three of us are staying for the full 8 nights/9 days and three are doing 4 nights and 5 days, and will return to Valdez on the 25th.  Looking to swap them out on the 25th.

If interested, please contact me...

Just an FYI.  We pulled the plug on the second part of this trip due to lack of interest.  But we'll still have a blast on the first part.

Though the second week will have something going on.  Just not a remote wilderness cabin trip....

Two others and myself are planning on touring the Kenai from the 27th through 2nd, and hitting Homer, Seward, Kenai and other places, as well as some of the lakes and rivers on the peninsula...

We will be travelling in a van and will rent a couple of yaks and camp.  Should be a fun week of Dolly Varden, Trout, Salmon, Rockfish and Halibut...

If interested... Even cheaper than the remote cabin trip, as no shuttle needed...  Contact me at yakonthely@gmail.com if interested...
