I went out yesterday without the yak because I missed the tide. I ended up on the Jetty doing some fishing. Had a good time caught 12 Sun perch and 2 sea trout (c&r). I was the only one on the jetty fishing yesterday morning. I was just at the incoming tide and a local came over to see how I was doing. I was standing on rock close to the waters edge. He began to talk to me and as I looked at him his eyes became large and pointed behind me and said "Look at that!" as I turned and looked less then 15 feet from me was a 40'+ whale floating next to me and looking at us. I stood there in awe as the local did.The whale just floated there for about 20-30 seconds then slowly headed out to sea. Then at the same time we were scrambling for our phones to capture this event. The whale inhaled and slowly sank. I noticed my fishing line started to move and realized the whale had connected with it. I grabbed my pole and figured I would have to cut line, but I could feel the weight rolling across it's back and not hooked. Then the tail appeared and I thought for sure that was going to snag, but did not, it gently rolled off.

What an experience. I worked on the ocean for 4 years and have never been that close to such enormous, beautiful and graceful creature

What a day!

 :laughing4: That's funny! I bet you did. After seeing the size of this so close I would have soiled myself as well if it had come as close to me in my yak.

I was told that sometimes whales are thought that kayaks or similar whale shape are another whale to them.
They approach and rub against them as a source of communication. Don't know if it is true or not?s

Yikes actually hit  :o ? Did you capsize?

Bent, I think whales communicate mostly by sound.

micahgee;

This is the other way of communication for the whales. As with most animals sound it not the only way of communications.
Thanks for the link.

Yea your right bent there are other methods of communication. Interesting about breaching showing dominance. I'm no Cetacean expert either but as the wiki article I linked says:

Quote
Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises, are much more dependent on sound for communication and sensation than are land mammals, because other senses are of limited effectiveness in water. Sight is less effective for marine mammals because of the way water absorbs light. Smell also is limited, as molecules diffuse more slowly in water than in air, which makes smelling less effective.

My point was I don't think that a whale would mistake you for another whale because they can essentially "talk" in some form or another to each other without bumping into you.
