I tend to be a loner fisher because of my erratic schedule and last minute calls based on weather and such on where to go.  But I have to say I have had a great time over the past two years fishing with different folks.

I'd love to hit these following derbies as a group not only to try and win them, but to promote kayak fishing and what a blast it is!  Obviously sport fishing is very well established here in Alaska but its amazing the looks and questions I get from everyone when I go out.  Can't think of a better group to do that then the bunch we have here at NWKA.

Hey, we need some BIG NWKA stickers, banners, or flags!  Anyone on that???

Homer Winter King Derby - March 23 (power boats plus)
Anchor Point Calcutta King Derby - typically 2nd or 3rd week in May. (power boats plus)
Seldovia Human Powered derby - Memorial Day weekend (no power boats as the name implies)

I was just messaging one of the Homer water taxi's trying to get a price on the Seldovia run as well as other times.

Once I start getting more information, I plan to start adding it to my site and we can start a planning thread for that particular event.

Ok, who has interest and for which event?  I'm not even sure I can make them all but it sure would be fun to be out in force and show them how it's done!

I intend to participate the Anchor Point Calcutta once again in May. The Homer derby depends entirely on conditions.  I wish the Seldovia derby wasn't on Memorial Weekend -- that makes it an unlikely trip for me.

I wanna do them all, but I have to found out my work schedule first.

I know a lady down here that does screen printing & embroidery.  If we can acquire a high res logo file, she can put it on whatever we'd like.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

For sure I don't know if i can make them all but its fun to day dream about it.  Definitely need to put it on the calendar so I don't book something silly over the top of it.

I wonder if the NWKA leaders would mind if we made a NWKA Team Alaska Banner.  That'd be pretty cool.

I really wanna get out with some of you all in cook inlet this spring/summer. I'm unconcerned going out of Whittier or Valdez solo, but not excited about a one way trip to kodiak or Hawaii...lol

Well its the last half of February.  Homer Derby March 32, Shrimp opener April 15 (though not sure I am going to do that this year), couple events in May.  I've often wondered how long it would take to drift to Kodiak...lol.  But if you look at the tracks of lost buoys and stuff, I think you would cycle back and forth in the inlet for a LONG time before you made your way out of Cook Inlet barring a continuous North breeze!

Let's do it.  I think End of March and early April is definitely when I am going to start my season in earnest.

I'd hate to say "yes" only because it implies there a single annual get together.  But I think its the best one right now to say its a definite get together.  Several reasons.  Homer winter derby is too early.  Seldovia is too far with additional logistical issues to make it effective for a gathering.

But I would say the best reason for the Anchor Point Derby is the way they have really welcomed us kayakers.  Every other derby seems like "What? That's not safe!" or "You need to fish in pairs with a witness ".  This is a fairly small local derby and frankly I amazed at their hospitality and the way they have encouraged our "non-local" participation.  They even offered our own category (which I personally declined because I think I can stack up against the power boats in this derby).  Two years ago my partner landed the first ever kayak king for the derby.  Last year I landed a fish on derby day...but they canceled the derby that day due to poor weather conditions.  Powerboat wimps!!! (really it got ugly so it was a good call.)

But yes, I agree this is the signature early season event.  If we put half a dozen yaks in the water we would have as good of a chance as any powerboat.  I can't wait!!!!!

It sure is!  We are also currently considering cutting the state in half to make Texas the third largest state..

On a side note, the Anchor point derby is on my bucket list this year...

Sounds good.  This weekend is looking possible!!  I'd say if you can calendar one event, it'd be the Anchor Point Derby...problem...they haven't calendered it yet either I don't think...
