I like that Rino, but from what I've seen the 650 is pushing $500...

They don't make 500 series rhinos anymore.  Only 120s and 610, 650, 655.

Probably plenty of new-old stock out there still though.  Should make them cheaper than 600-series.

Where would you purchase new/old stock of the 500+ series?  Amazon? Anyone have another place to check out?

To find new-old stock of anything you usually have to hunt around, exercise your Google-fu.  It's not always easy to find them, but when you do the price is typically really good for discontinued electronics.

However, I'm not sure why you say it's limited in hiking use.  Anything outdoors where you may be separated seems to be the perfect use.  I believe there is even a map pack for hiking trials for them....

Because unless someone is listening on the same channel, the radio is useless.  Can it do everything the normal 60 series can do?  Yea, but not nearly as user friendly and navigating the screens is more difficult.

They finally fixed that with the 600 series and touch screen.  Now they are super easy to use.  Except getting the damned weather radio to turn off once you turn it on.  Still gotta bust out the manual to figure that out.  (I have a Rino 650)

I think there are only 4 screens I actually use on mine.  Radio, Map, Trip Counter, Main Screen.

Once you have those mastered, your golden.

Your correct about not needing a radio if nobody else has one but you do have the emergency channels.  Channel scanning is also interesting if your nosey and want to listen to others conversations.

I know that when snowmobiling, the 5-0 will channel scan to find out where people are riding.  I've listened to others talking and riding in Wilderness areas.... idiots on both counts.

The worst thing I learned on my GPS was checking elevation differences while I'm out hiking / hunting.  Do I really want to know that I need to climb 1k feet up to the truck?  Not really :P

Thanks for all the input guys: I don't think the radio is something I'll need now that I think about it.

I still suggest a good look at 450T, with 400x240 pixel touch screen the display to size ratio is great and price cut makes it a great deal.  It has internal memory you can load maps on and a slot for micro-SD.....

Rodger - This unit does seem nice; the screen size and the SD slot are nice a features.  I have some reservation with the touch screens...I guess I'm a bit rough with my gear because I've had to replace two phones in the past two years when the touch screen stops working.  Does it seem like a pretty robust unit?  I'm clumsy as hell so there's no doubt I'll drop the thing a number times.

I've listened to others talking and riding in Wilderness areas.... idiots on both counts.

That stuff really gets under my skin.  I agree, they are idiots.
