I have a friend that was left paraplegic after a dirt bike accident when he was in his teens. He is showing a lot of interest in our sport. I'd love to help him out as much as I can. Does anyone have any knowledge on the subject?
I sort of think a nice, stable sit on kayak would be safest. Obviously paired with good immersion gear.
I'd love to see him on the water. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm assuming lower extremities are affected?  A good wide Cobra would work for him.  Fish and dives are known for being highly stable boats.

Yeah, he has use of his arms. Obviously he isn't getting a Mirage drive powered kayak, haha. I'll look into the fish and dive. Man, it would be exciting to see him on   a kayak.

How big is he?

Something like this might work. You could also rent some a tandem and get him out on the water and see how he does. Of course start in a calm lake in the summer time.

I too think a tandem would be the way to go.  He's going to have to fish with a buddy anyway as loading/unloading/launching yaks etc etc. would be difficult if not impossible without the use of his legs. So with the tandem there is less gear to shift etc and help (the other paddler) is right there if needed.  I don't want to seem insensitive but would his inability to push back against the footpegs effect his ability to transfer energy and paddle effectively?

I saw an article recently about a paraplegic kayak angler. From the pics I saw, he was doing quite well at it! I am pretty sure it was in one of last year's issues of Kayak Angler magazine, but I am not 100% on that. Might be a place to start.

I'm not sure if it would be a problem or not. I think a tandem would eliminate that problem. Fishing in a solo boat might be a different story. I guess I could have him try my Outback out to gauge how hard/easy it would be on his own. Obviously having him use the paddle and not the mirage drive  :)

He's 125 pounds. I'm not sure how much upper body strength he has but he is a pretty scrawny guy.

Sam Drevo is training a paraplegic paddler named Aaron Paulson for the upcoming Paralympic trials. We paddled together on Lacamas Lake a few weeks ago. Sam or Aaron may be able to make some suggestions. PM me if. You want their numbers.
