Ok I'm curious as to what you all do once you've caught your fish and are still out on the water... say for example when I caught my limit of trout last time I was out I kept them in my foot wells where the cold lake water was coming in from my front scuppers (notably I realize not the best idea but it kept them cool and out of the sunlight...) and would periodically check them and splash a little cold water on them (again not my greatest idea but not the worst...).  So what is it... cooler with ice, catch bag of sorts, stringer, or some other ingenious item... just curious

Seek and you shall find...try the search function and you'll find many discussions covering much minutiae, including but not limited to;

species, construction materials, weather, price and availability, cooling agents, blood - disperse or contain? and many more number one hits by yesterday's greatest artists.

Demonick, how well does this bag work compared to some of the other more expensive kill bags on the market?
I've been looking for a kill bag to keep my catch fresh that wont cost me an arm and a leg.

For trout and such I use a igloo soft sided cooler, a plastic bag as a liner and some gel ice packs. Seems to work fine, its cheap and it floats  ;)

I've been trying to figure out something in case I want to go catch a bunch of Crappie.  A catch bag won't work real well when it's 100F over here.

I was thinking about some sort of net that I could keep in the water (like a live well).  It should have an open top so i can toss fish into it easily.

I sewed my own trapezoid shaped catch bag (for salmon).  I'm not a talented seamstress, just cheap.  It's a dry-bag style with a removable liner and easy enough to throw in some ice when the warmer sunny weather is beating down on the hull.  It has 1/2" foam for insulation.  Cost me $7 and an hour of time.  Dry-bag is washable when the blood and stink gets too foul.

I was bass fishing in Florida this past winter and my buddy used a wire basket for fish storage.  Insert 5lb bass, drag it behind the boat, take pictures at the dock, then release the fish.  The lake even had gators, which I thought was a little crazy to drag a basket of fish...we survived.

Good luck.

Any decent fish bag should be able to keep a couple pounds of ice for a days fishing. If you're handy with a sewing machine, you can make your own pretty cheap. I made one that is custome fitted to the hull of my trident, 4'x2', that will keep ice and fish cold for a full 8-9 hrs on the water.

Good luck.

This would be great if it was not made of metal.  I might be able to build something using a net replacement.

i've never used a more expensive bag.  this one has an internal bag I fill with a few sheets of Techni-Ice.

RR,
I picked one of these up at Next Adventure.  They have them for $49 I think.  I think you get a nwka discount too. They are big but your goal is to catch big fish, right.

I use it on hot summer days rock fish fishing and for salmon.  Sadley, a salmon has not yet made it in there.

Thanks Craig. I ordered this one from West Marine a few days ago. It's been liquidated to make room for the new models. I like the look and reviews on it, problem is its advertised dimensions are 24"x20"x7" (tapering off from 20 to 7). It seems too short for most lings and chinook. The reason i ordered is the photos make it look bigger than 24" and the rep at west marine said he was sure it was bigger than that.
Anyway, when it comes in if its smaller than I like I will return it and get the yakcatch 3 from next adventure.
