I was out kayaking from the gorge to in front of Beacon Hill Park today.  Noticed a lot of (crab trap?) floats in the Victoria outer harbour (in front of the coast guard).  Anyone know if it is a "leased area" or if it is open to all who wish to fish?  Quality of the crabs caught (dioxins)?

Hi Steve, I think it's pretty much fair game for anyone that has a trap.  I know when I drop mine off at Albert Head, there are lots of commercial traps there as well.  I'm told there are 3 commercial crab companies in that small pocket alone and it stretches all the way to Esquimalt Lagoon.

Check with DFO if you're not sure.
