Hey folks, I am planning on being up in the Winchester Bay neighborhood for a family vacation in late August, I don’t have room in the car for the kids AND a kayak, and my wife won’t let me leave any of the kids behind SOOO.

If a fella wanted to do some slow-water fishing somewhere in the Winchester Bay or surrounding area, is there a place somewhere near that either rents (decent SOT) kayaks or maybe even does tours?

Any recommendations on rental spots, species of fish to target in august (I would likely be going by myself, with unfamiliar gear, so I would prefer a location that is low-stress and safer than your average ocean going voyage.) etc would be greatly appreciated, thank you!! ;D

Hey there, Waxer's Surf n Skate in Coos Bay does Hobie rentals. That would be your best option. The shop is located off the 101 heading north so it isn't out of the way for you. As far as fishing...the Chinook should be biting within kayaks reach. I have only fished that area a couple of times from the banks but they get a good coho run later in the year.
There are others in this area with more knowledge on that area that should chime in  ;)
I'm talking about you, Roy!
I hope that was helpful. Hopefully CBY sees this and offers up his info on the windy bay.

OR I might be able to hook You up when you come out get you on the water fishing Drop by the Economy Inn in reedsport And see Jgrady(the Manger)See what fish is biting. The oyster Triangle is easy low profile fishing the current in the river takes Timing the tides just right,Umpqua really rips with the currents.I have an extra sit on top paddle kayak and My old Sink works well too.But if you need a Hobie to rent, there's nothing in Winchester Bay to rent kayak wise.

Naw, I am not that picky to "require" a Hobie, I just need something big enough to float my fat butt <LOL> my main boat right now is an old Perception Prism (which isn't a Rolls Royce, but I could afford it and it works,) and beggars can't be choosers, I just didn't want to try and have to balance on some 9' Pelican or something  ;D

I will definitely hit Reedsport, part of my annual tradition is that I get to go to that knife store in Reedsport and buy a new mother of pearl handle pocketknife for myself christmas <LOL> we are looking to be there on the late side of mid-August, I might be able to carve one day of the week out for daddy-play-time! I will send you a PM when it gets closer, and see if you're available! Thank you so much for the info!

If you ever get down to Sacramento, let me know!

Yeah if I don't manage to get out on a kayak, I am still dragging my crab traps up there, and hope to spend at least a day on the crabbing pier, my kids had a TON of fun pulling up pots, so neither way is a loss!! ;D Thanks for the info! I will put that shop in my contacts list!

Like LLH said, Waxers rents Hobies in Coos bay 541-266-9020. As far as fishing, Salmon will be in full swing at that time but the Umpqua river isn't exactly low stress. I guess depending on the tidesand wind you could fish parts of  the bay at Winchester Bay and it would be pretty mellow. Like jgrady said the triangle is a nice low stress and safer area to fish. He knows more about it then I do.

Some decent freshwater fishing(Bass, Trout) can be had at the local lakes close to there like Eel lake(trout) or Ten Mile lakes(Bass, trout)

If you have any more questions post up or send me a PM and i will gladly try to help the best i can.

The triangle does tend to produce very well....crab too. I have fished that many times before I got into kayak fishing, back then it was a float tube...... If I remember sandshrimp for bait was a big hit in there..... It has been 3 - 4 years since I fished so I'm sure others have more info than me.

I used  to dive the triangle years ago. I never really had much luck with the spearfishing. I did harvest a lot of HUGE red rock crabs. A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with a diver coming in from Sunset while I was heading out. He said that the divers fish the triangle really hard and fishing isn't that great lately.

For fresh water  you got Lake Marie which is a couple miles from Winchester Bay it has trout and bass and you could  fish Halfmoon bay there at the begining of the jetty if you don't mind the crab bouys. You also have Hall lake whic is across from Eel lake.
