Been using my Uniden MHS125 for a little while now and I have nothing but good things to say so far.

+1. That's the exact model I'm using and I love it.

Hey Roy. The standard horizon hx290 is a solid radio. Takes a beating pretty well but it's a little on the bulky side. I think there may be a little extra material in the floating ones. I always keep mine tied to my Pfd, so if I were to do it again I would just get the 280. Pretty much the same radio just a little slimmer. Both work great.

I went non floating to get a smaller size and just tethered it to the pfd. I'm partial to ICOM.

I also have the HX290. I'm happy with it. It seems to work great and it didn't cost too much.

Just got a HX300 from gps store for $105 after rebate. I really like the small form factor, long battery life and it floats. Haven't tried it yet. I expect it works as good as any HX.

When registering a DSC handheld VHF, what do you use for a vessel description if you'll be using the VHF radio on multiple boats?  I just bought an HX851 but i will use it for kayaking and as a backup on power boating in the salt.  Just wondering how to set up the MMSI correctly so help can come my way if needed in an emergency.   Thanks.

I don't think it matters so much. I just left it blank.

If I'm in trouble I will be the guy flailing my arms about and yelling "HELLLP MEEE" at the top of my lungs. I don't think there will be much confusion.

Seriously I would register it to the powerboat. Your chances of getting in trouble are higher (more systems, more opportunity for failure) and you would likely be further offshore.

Ive been using a Cobra hh-330. runs about $100 bucks. It floats, has good battery life (even when set at 5 watts) and isn't that bulkey. Doesn't have MSSI, if that's an important feature to you. I give it 5 stars.

I notice a big difference in the quality of OTHERS radio when listening.
