What would be the best and safest way to cross a ferry line?

Yesterday when I was heading north and was waiting for departure of one of Mukilteo ferries about 60-70 yards on his port, I heard - "F*ck you" on the radio.
On my way back another Mukilteo ferry beeped at me while clearly seeing that I'm not on his way and even paddling out his way to show that I'm aware of him and have no intention to interfere with his operation. I also tried to talk to him on radio while he was loading to clear with him my crossing of his course, but he just ignored me.

I would assume that I was totally wrong and messed up with him, but today I saw the same ferry beeping at a sailing yacht which was at least half mile away from the ferry and at least a cable past his course, which gave me an idea that ferry's cap beeps at everyone in his sight.

I decided that in Mukilteo if I head north I will launch from a very tiny beach north of the ferry in order to avoid ferries at all.

But it isn't immediately clear what should I do if I encounter a ferry in the sound.

I doubt it was ferry personnel cussing you out.  My suggestion is if you feel what you are doing is safe and obvious to the ferry, ignore them.

I would rather they blast their horn at everyone all the time. The last thing you want is to turn around and see a ferry barring down on you.

They probably have a requirement to signal anyone within a certain range, regardless of direction or actual danger.
