About a week ago I broke/ dislocated my right index finger.  That following weekend, my family and myself were to attend a camping and kayak fishing weekend fun at Hobuck, Neah Bay with friends and family.  Unfortunately I had that dreadful accident at work.  When I was at the ER, my mind was racing, because the finger that got injured was my fishing trigger finger.  I asked the Dr. if I can still kayak and fish, he replied with a NO, that I would be out for the season.  It almost brought me to tears.  My wife was laughing because other people would freak out about the extent of damage my finger received, but I was more worried about fishing in a kayak.  Well, we didn't make it to the Hobuck trip, so now we are looking forward to the Salmon Slay Ride in Grays harbor.  I was hoping to participate in that event, but to my dismay, my wound hasn't healed yet and the Dr. said another week and no contact with saltwater.  That is not going to stop me from attending the Salmon Slay Ride, instead of participating I will Help out with the event with all 9 of my available fingers..  I hope to see everyone who is participating in the Slayride event next week Saturday.  God speed and enjoy the weekend.

your mileage may vary, and I'm certainly not saying to disregard the advice of a professional, but I cut my left thumb very deeply across the first knuckle near the wrist and severed the tendons on top. They had to reconnect everything and stitched it all up...I was two weeks away from a scheduled bare boat sailing/scuba vacation in the BVIs and the doctor told me absolutely no immersion...yeah, right!

Anyways, I totally disregarded doc's orders and although I kept it wrapped and dressed it every night with anti-biotic cream, I dove my butt off two or three dives everyday...that puppy healed up so nicely!

Afterwards the doc admitted that salt water is actually good for a wound but the possibility of infection from bacteria that may (or may not) be present in the water is a risk...I think the antibiotic cream mitigated this.

Hope you heal up quickly!

I am with nangusdog with salt water exposure ...as long as red tide is not in!
Have you considered two layers of a finger condom to protect the wound?
After all, you won't be picking your nose any time soon...so what's the risk  ;)

lol...a finger condom would work, but the finger was dislocated, lacerated almost all the way around and the tip of the finger was held on by some skin and tendons..it was a pretty bad, I didn't feel the pain until I removed my glove and saw the destruction....hahaha....thanks for the advice guys.

I'm curious how you did this.  Did a pipe roll onto it, or did you get it between a bell and spigot while installing?  I manage a bunch of waterline construction inspectors so this could be helpful information for us.  Thanks!

we were maneuvering a 6"x7' ductile pipe through a utility service tunnel entrance and we slowly inched the pipe through door, with a lot of dirt and grit on the deck, when one guy pushed and I pulled, the end that I was pulling slammed up against a stationary ductile piping, these pipes were at least 80 years old.  if my finger wasn't there, there would've been a really bad rupture in the fresh water system and we would've been swept into the tunnel.  I think my finger saved an emergent repair to old piping systems and our lives... ;D  everyone in my shop thinks that would've been a purple heart status...hahaha...funny thing was that we were aware of the hazard and that everything just happened too fast.  we deemed it an accident, of course.
