I was wondering this also. I was thinking about making a trip down there, but I have never fished there and am not sure how to go about it. Cant find much info online.

The river is open and many good bright fish being caught at this time. A few darker ones as well since they have been lurking in the fresh water for quite a while, waiting for some water!
I get no time off to fish these days, but I have friends that may be willing to take someone out bank fishing.

boxofrain---is the lower river amenable to kayak fishing???  Would you have to duck lead from the bankies???

Very easy to do....not too many bank fish near the mouth, and the ones that do are pretty respectful of boaters ( if you respect them).
The current can be swift at the jaws, but just a hundred yards or so into the jetties it is not bad.
Easy launch from the docks, I usually put in near the fuel dock, good parking, easy access with stairs and ramp, little to no traffic. a coupla hundred yard paddle and you are in the river. With as little water as there is now, it should be perfect for a Yak.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to come down and give it a try. Does it matter what the tides are doing? Would it be best to ride up river and back with the tide? Thanks

I"m totally up for camping for a week at Harris Beach State Park, a few miles north of the river, for the first week of October 2014.  Imagine a 50 king on the other end of your slayride!!  The pic below is a 60# taken upriver a mile or so from the jaws, guide Andy Martin holding the fish.  He guides every fall on the Chetco.

Here's the park:

Anybody else wanna make the trip south next fall???
