I have an RV reserved for the first week of July in Anchorage and would like some suggestions on what to visit and where we might wet a line. Will have to bank fish or stream fish as our Hobies won't fit in our suitcases.  Hope to find places a little primitive not RV parks.Campgrounds ok if fishing nearby. Also asking for guide recommendations for at least one guided trip. Preliminary  plans include flying to Juneau for a few days, taking the Marine Hwy to Ketchican for a few more days before flying home. Would like to kayak fish somewhere if possible.  Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I don't have much experience with the Anchorage/Kenai area in July but Ward Lake outside Kechtican was good to our group a couple years ago. Pink flies and seven weights. My only real tip is be flexible. My experience is that one week can make a world of difference in those waters. Good luck. I love Alaska.

Well the first week of July should find you plenty of fish and decent weather, but some species won't be available in abundance quite yet.

Kings will be in the Kenai River, but fishing may not be open for them yet.
Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the Kenai River should be catchable.....quite possible to land a whopper
Most of the freshwater lakes around there should be good for some rainbows, kokanee, or char species
Ling Cod opening season starts July 1st, so big bucket mouths can be found out of Seward
Halibut out of whittier, Seward, Ninilchik, and Homer
Rockfish out of whittier and Seward
Grayling can be caught in a couple of the lakes around if you're not afraid of a hike.

Camping in an RV on the Kenai Peninsula in July .......you will not be alone.  There is a reason they call it Alaska'a playground.  Lots of fun activities in the outdoors to do and see, but be prepared for other like minded individuals to be doing the same thing.  Check out Coopers Landing, Seward, Kenai, Soldotna, Ninilchik, and Homer.  All of those locations have RV accesible campgrounds and good fishing nearby.  It all depends on what type of fishing you want to do.

Check out this thread (and the thread inside the thread) for more information regarding what to do on the peninsula.

As for guides.....that too depends on what you want to catch.

Many guide services operate out of Seward, Homer, Ninilchik, Soldotna, and Cooper Landing.  You can find most of them on the web.  Here are a couple that I personally use when I'm not in my fleet o' Hobies.

http://innandoutcharters.com/   THe owner is a no BS guy that will put you on fish and teach you how to land them.  Listen to him....he knows what he is talking about.  I'll be on his boat around that timeframe to chase big lings.

http://www.driftingonthefly.com/  nice very friendly guy that catches fish on the river.  He'll put you on fish.

There are plenty of other resources to check out too.  Fish Alaska magazine, the Alaska Outdoor Forum, and the Alaska Game & Fish website all have good information on what to do, where to do it, and when to do it.

Pay attention on here as well.  Fishing reports begin to show up when summer begins.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

What Kenai guy said!

But to add a few more....
I kept a log from 1995 to 2004 that concentrated in Southcentral Alaska. In July most of the focus of mine was on the Kenai River for kings but that's a whole lot less reliable.

Stay on this board and keep an eye out. I have multiple kayaks and I still haven't figured out how to use all three at one time so there's a possibility there.

July I'd say try halibut off Seward or deep creek. You may even hang a coho in Seward or a king if they are open out of a Deep Creek.

It can be crowded but you can find some solitude if you make a little effort.

Thanks for all the information, I'm sure I will have more questions as time goes on. The in and out charters looks doable for us, thanks. We are not flyfisherman, but like streams and lakes with our Hobies. Use spinners and good old bait.  Are there places that pack the fresh fish, if we are lucky enough to catch some, and ship it home as we will not be able to keep it in the motorhome? Ling is my very favorite fish to eat, hope to hook into a big one. I grew up fishing in Monterey Bay and also love any kind of rockfish.  Thanks again for all the websites to check out.

No problem finding someone to pack and ship your catch from either Anchorage or the Peninsula. I'd also suggest that if you're thinking of streamside fishing and looking for a less crowded experience, you consider some destinations that are not on the Kenai Peninsula. I know you only have a week, and won't want to spend too much time in transit. Still, we'd be remiss if we didn't suggest some destinations on the road north rather than south:

Talkeetna: You can hire a riverboat (Mahay's or Three Rivers Charters) to drop you (and pick you back up) at Clear Creek, where during the first week of July you could fish for rainbows, grayling, sockeye and Kings.  Talkeetna is halfway between Anchorage and Denali National Park. Beautiful country, and the drop off assures that you're not in combat fishing conditions.

Another place I fish to get away from the crowds is the Tangle Lakes area on the Denali Highway (Paxson side) -- for grayling, primarily. The Gulkana flows from there, and that's a great little stream for reds and Kings that time of the year.  Also, the Klutina ...

Kenai_Guy has given you all of the high-probability locations for the Peninsula. You're most likely to get into fish there. Just wanted to share a few of the freshwater places you could target that won't be quite so crowded.

Thanks Akfishergal,  I will enjoy studying a map to find all of these places. And hopefully be able to fish many of them. Hope to meet some of you Alaskans too.

Like others said...keep an eye out for more info on here.

I think amongst at least Kard and I there is a small armada of Tupperware to be fished from.

If you are in the Ketchikan area talk to Howard McKim at
http://www.ketchikankayakco.com/
His rental kayaks are just a short paddle from some pretty spectacular halibut - salmon - ling etc, and he will suggest a great day or more of great fishing. Several good RV parks in the area.
Good luck
