got myself a USIA pro rafter dry suit for Christmas...that I still havn't taken out on the water  :'( .  I haven't seen a nice day offshore and had a day off work at the same time.

so my question is where to fish in Jan-Feb between PDX and Astoria to get out and use my dry suit.  I've really never targeted fresh water fish other than trout - but want to learn.  the fishery wouldn't even have to be good, just a slight to moderate chance of catching fish would be a bonus.  suggestions?

If I were in your area I would explore the lower Columbia for bass.  Largemouth and smallmouth can be found in that area.  There are also plenty of little lakes on the coast that have populations of bass and trout.  Many of these require a lot of time on the water before you start getting bit on a regular basis though.  My favorite for the January and February time frame is hitting the coastal bays for crab, clams and perch.  Make sure you understand the tides before heading out.  Steelhead will be in several coastal river systems too.

CNR sturgeon could be good.  That is what I do when I can't get out of town this time of year.

If you are in the Astoria area Coffenbury Lake at Ft Stevens State Park is good for trolling for steelhead and cutthroat.   If the weather isn't good for fishing there are the WWII batteries to visit!  Good camping too.

Come up here to Victoria, CC. They are nailing blackmouth right in the inner harbour out from the gas dock! you could catch your 2 springers and then tie the yak up, walk across the street and wear your new drysuit into the Empress Hotel for afternoon tea. Civilized fishing. lol

civilized fishing - I love it!  will the fish bite before 10am?  I would hate to be late for my morning tea!

If I were in your area I would explore the lower Columbia for bass.

I was afraid someone would mention bass...anyone got a bass for dummies book I could borrow?

YouTube has a lot of good free info for bass fishing.
