Just an update on my side planer experiment:

I tried a different planer called a Sidewinder planer.  This type of planer made it way less complicated to deploy.  It does not have the rotating arm and you do not have to wrap the line around it to set the planer up, like you do with the Hot Shot Planer.  .  The Sidewinder also did not release prematurely like the Hot Shot did.  Although I was unsuccessful catching fish this last trip, I was able to deploy everything and keep it fishing all the way through the drift and into the tail outs without problems.  I think this method is one I will keep working on.

I have gopro video of it in action and will try to get that up.  This was my first attempt at using the camera so not the best angles.

I recently bought a Sidewinder, but won't be able to try it out until the ice is off the lakes.  How did you like the Sidewinder, compared to other planer boards you've used?  Would you recommend them?

Being a cheap bastard, I'm going to try to find a way to make some replacement releases (those little squares of black rubber) out of old rubber gloves.

I bought a sidewinder last year for summer steelhead because I was ticked off at my hot shot.I have yet to use it but it is well built and you don't need 3 hands to set it.just didn't have the nack for the hot shot I guess.I should try it on trout for kicks.

I liked the Sidewinder a lot more.  It was way easier to set up and get it out fishing.  It also floats so I was able to float it into the next hole down after working it deep into the tail out.
