This will likely be an odd post of sorts, I'm curious if anyone in the Subject area is getting out this weekend 3/8 or 3/9 for any lake fishing?

I ask, not because I'll be yak'n along side, however, I'm determined to get out fishing this weekend and though I do not have a yak (yet), I wouldn't mind being somewhere and seem them in action - call it a case study. (I'll be observing amt of water covered, fish rate, tactics, species - really anything to compare with what I'm doing from the bank).

Again, I know it's an odd ball request, but even though I don't a kayak yet, it's all I want to read up on, learn about - so I figured what better way to absorb some more information than to see some yak fishing in action?

Thanks!

Any specific species you're wanting to target?

If the body of water was novice enough, I may even try out my pontoon (entirely not what this thread is about though), as it'll be the first time I've had a chance to use it since getting it.

Being you're in Salem, if you're wanting to keep it extremely local, I could mention Walter Wirth, but I wouldn't blame you at all for not wanting to go there - so, Willamette Mission State Park (edge of Keizer, $5 to park) allows watercraft. (Been on it with an electric trolling motor).

If you're wanting to venture a little farther, Independence is supposed to have a yak friendly launch for the Willamette, my vantage point likely wouldn't be as great, but I wouldn't complain either. Equally as far would be Silverton Reservoir, open to boats, but electric motors only.

A little farther than Independence, possibilities are endless... Detroit lake is pretty popular, and decent fishery this time of year. It's water is likely still decently low and I've seen paddle yaks going about it before (not fishing though).  Green Peter, might be a little early, but Kokes aplenty (I've always heard, the earlier you go in the year, the shallower they are).

If none of the above sound interesting, I'll continue to noodle and see what else I can come up with.

Looks like there will be a group of us locals (a small armada actually) hitting one of the reservoirs in the Eugene area on Sunday. We haven't decided yet which one but considering Dexter, Lookout, Fall Creek, Dorena, or Cottage Grove... So many choices...   :toothy9:

Fall Creek, I dig the place, though have really only fished the cove area (near the group campsite).

Let me know when/where you decide (I plan on getting out both Saturday and Sunday.

Fall Creek is a mud hole at the moment, I think Dexter will be our best bet with all the snow run off plus they are calling for an additional 2-4 inches of rain by Thursday. Seeing how I live within 5 minutes of all 3 lakes I will run up to Fall creek after work and check it out. I was up there a couple of days ago and it just looked like mud soup.

I'd head down south if there was a good place to fish.  Anyone fished at Devils lake lately?  I've heard of some big rainbows coming out of there.

Dexter actually has a pretty abundant fishery. Here's a link with some information.

Copy/Pasted from the Willamette Zone report:
"DEXTER RESERVOIR: trout

Dexter Reservoir will be stocked this week with 2,900 legal-sized rainbow trout. The reservoir is adjacent to Highway 58 near Lowell and is open all year."

^^ Which may be a lie compared to their stocking scheduled here: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/fishing/trout_stocking_schedules/2014/South_Willamette_2014.pdf as it states stocking the week of 2/24 and 3/10 for Dexter... all is well, it's still fishible! :-D

To my knowledge, the Cabela's trophy fish still has not been caught out of Dexter either.

One more thing I forgot. The University of Oregon crew is having races over the weekends so we have to be mindful of them "they pretty much own the lake in a sense" that is where there crew headquarters is and where they do all their training.

At least its not a drag boat weekend! That's some crazy stuff right there!

By the way, I hear the Pikeminow are super thick in there these days and will bite on just about anything. http://www.oregonfishingforum.com/forumdisplay.php/40-Dexter-Lake
