Finally got my hobie scupper cart TIG welded back together. I took it took a shop in Olympia for the welding and they found a new crossbar as well for a very reasonable fee. The welds seem a lot sturdier and the cross bars are better aligned than when it was originally made. It will last a lot longer than the original construction for sure.

I've got to go get the same thing done to mine. When you say "better aligned" do you mean they moved the junction site, where the new welds were done?

Man I need to do that. Good idea.

I have had two of these re-welded. The original is just spot welded and I don't off road my Outbacks at all. I think it's under-designed for the weight of some Hobies. My local Iron shop did the job for $10 ea. Hobie sent me a replacement frame for free so I had that weld built up.

The frame was originally not straight, it must have been welded together a bit crooked. The weld and junctions were about the same just straighter. Not a big deal but still it feels like a new cart ;)

Yea SFharry those original welds are worthless.

Hope you have better luck than I did.  I pull my Outback over some bad rocks to fish Big Cliff Res below Detroit Lake on a regular basis for trout and broke two Hobie carts pretty quickly.  Decided to build my own to handle the ridiculous terrain I was asking it to handle.   (haven't posted a pic before so hope this works).  So far, no troubles with this one built with 3/4" and 1/2" pipe.

Nice. That thing looks heavy duty. I broke my hobie cart also and had it welded. Much better now. Its hard to believe they sell the carts with those tiny spot welds. Now if I can stop my wheels from falling off all the time... :-\

Those of you with Hobie scupper carts likely have had the welds on your cart pop.  I had mine rewelded recently and couldn't be happier.

If you're in Seattle, there's a guy in Kenmore I found that does great work.  He charged me $20 per cart.  Call him if you need your cart welded.

I've also had problems with the adjustable black plastic slides that keep the hull from rubbing on the wheel cart.  No matter how hard I crank down on them, they eventually seem to move.

Morgan at Hobie shared a great solution.  Remove the adjustable slider by unscrewing the allen screw and remove.  Cut a piece of 1" PVC (electrical conduit is better as it's thicker gauge).  I cut mine to 1.5" which works good for my Hobie ProAngler. Slide PVC down the shaft so it sits between the cross bar and the black plastic slider.  Photo attached.
