I am new to surf launching.  I have gone out from river ports numberous times but I just got to wondering if the same rules apply in regards to stage of the tide.   I always try to leave (and return) port on the incoming as the outgoing tides tend to stack up the bar.   Does this same rule of thumb apply to surf launching or does it matter less?   Obviouly looking at the surf conditions and periods trump just about everything... I would assume.  Thanks for the input!

Tidal effect will be dependant upon the place that you're launching.  There is no one guideline that covers all areas.  There are a couple of places I launch from that benefit from one stage or another but the swell height, direction and period are the deal makers/breakers.

That makes sense.  There is quite a variety of launching here in Southern Oregon.  There are some open beaches and some rocky coves too.   There also is quite a difference in bars from the Chetco to the Rogue....two close ports.  The rule of thumb on bar crossing during an incoming is always a good rule of thumb, but is less important on the Chetco than the Rogue.  I just didn't know if the surf tends to be bigger during an outgoing Vs incoming generally speaking on most beach entries.
Thanks again for the input!

Every beach is different, and different parts of a beach may vary considerably in terms of waves due to many factors including tides, topography etc. Oh and +1 what Spot said
